Indians designate RHP Josh Judy for assignment to clear a spot on 40-man roster for OF Aaron Cunningham. Roster is at capacity.
Bastian on Twitter. If I've got this right, we'll know if Judy's been retained or claimed by another team in the next few days. Judy is a 25 y/o right-handed reliever who was very poor in his Major League debut last season. He has had some success in the minors.
Surprised it was him instead of Juan Diaz, but we'll have to wait and see if Judy is claimed. The Indians rarely lose a player on waivers, in the Rule 5, etc.

Simply for depth reasons I’d hate to see Cunningham’s price rise from one to two upper level pitchers.

Both of whom were well into the double digits on the depth chart, I’ve got to assume. If Judy had ended up throwing a single high-leverage pitch for the Tribe this year, we’d have much larger problems.
I don’t get worked up over relief prospects. Not too long ago, Frank Herrman was dominating the minor leagues.
Plus, while everyone is eyeing CC Lee to be this year’s Pestano, I think Zach Putnam is going to shut down some people with that splitter.
I wouldn’t say “dominating,” but the point still stands.
I would argue that the volatility of relievers makes depth all that much more important in the pen. I’m not saying this move shouldn’t have been made by any means, just that losing Judy could have more of an impact that we’d think at this juncture.
Maybe I missed this discussion in another string, but why would they have DFA’d Juan Diaz? He was just added to the 40 man to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. I agree that he is one of the weakest players on the roster, but the FO must want to keep him if they recently rostered him in lieu of someone else.
I was a little worried that Josh might get snatched up, so naturally I read the MLBTR comments to get some substantial insight into the issue of his attractiveness to other teams.
It was just a bunch of Judge Judy jokes.
Based on that, I think he’s safe.
Signing veterans to minor league deals is a good thing and every team does it, but the extent to which we are re-stocking Columbus also has to do with the failure of a whole cohort of minor leaguers in the Tribe’s system. This includes former prospects like Nick Weglarz and Beau Mills, poor draft choices like Tim Fedroff and John Drennen, and guys who just stagnated like Hodges, McBride and Goedert.

Really makes you appreciate the stretch of drafts that included Belle (1987), Thome (1989), Giles (1989), Ramirez (1991), and Sexson (1993).
I read it more like, “been a while since we turned up even one Sexson.”
Richie was a very tall player—a big target—who could occasionally hit baseballs far; certainly he made for a more legible selection than the Drennen crowd.
I like that Beau Mills could be listed in all three groups.

We’re going with “former prospect” for Weglarz, who turned 24 two days ago?
Let’s give him another year of sucking.
Seriously! Seven minor league seasons under his belt now. In that time his peak for playing time came way back in 2007 (127 games). Since then, in order, his games played have gone: 106, 105, 87, 41. If I’m not mistaken, I think this year will also use his last option. He is almost a former baseball player at this point, let alone a former prospect.
Why DFA him until we have someone to take the spot? It is not as if we had anyone selected in the rule 5 draft. But should one of these non-roster spring training invites impress, Weglarz should certainly be one of the people considered for roster removal.
I don’t know. We’re sort of stuck trying to see Diaz the way the front office does.
