Trememdnous photo of Alex Cole and Albert Belle, from the SI_Valut Twitter feed, which is really a great follow for this kind of thing.

THis is awesome. I miss those uniforms. Lefty Albert Belle?!

Those are my favorite Tribe unis.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 2, 2011 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, I guess I never fully appreciated how bulked up Albert became in his prime.

by MTF on Dec 2, 2011 1:07 PM EST reply actions

I usta work out with a guy in Cleveland who was Belle’s trainer. He said that Albert could get 10 reps plus with 225 on the 45 degree incline bench press. That’s linebacker strong.

I’ve seen Division III linebackers do that.

by johnf34 on Dec 2, 2011 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Well, they are linebackers. So they count.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 2, 2011 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not hard to get strong if you work at it a lot. The difference between a D3 linebacker and an NFL linebacker isn’t strength.

Exactly. I played Division III basketball the last four years and we had like 5 guys on our team who could have done that.

by johnf34 on Dec 2, 2011 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

You understand I’m talking about an incline bench, not a flat bench.

Our best players wear suits.

by mauichuck on Dec 3, 2011 5:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, our strength coach had us do that more than the flat one. And I hated doing incline so passionately.

by johnf34 on Dec 3, 2011 7:46 AM EST up reply actions

But you understand he’s talking about underwater as well, right?

On the surface of a planet with a much higher gravitational force, right?

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

I need a giant of poster of this in my life.

by JulioBernazard on Dec 2, 2011 1:39 PM EST reply actions

When we all have the time, I’ll have to regale you gents & lasses with the story of how I got one of these vintage Tribe jerseys signed by the amicable Mr. Belle himself, right outside Municipal Stadium.

My cousin has a baseball card signed by Joey Belle.

by notthatnoise on Dec 2, 2011 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

He just did a private autograph signing…the guy who put it together for us said that he was very nice. He was even happy to sign some stuff that, you would think, he would get upset about (see: “Tic Tic SI cover”). I think he has mellowed out in old(er) age. This is what I got at the signing…my first Belle autographs!

by OscarDog on Dec 3, 2011 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

That’s pretty cool. I’m not surprised he mellowed out as he got older. Being under much less pressure and out of the spot light will do that for you. His life probably slowed down a lot after baseball.

That and he probably got off the PEDs.

by tflannery on Dec 5, 2011 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

I got Reggie Jackson in 1978. And he was notorious for not signing.

Ha, I actually met Reggie in a men’s room at a restaurant in Pacific Grove, CA. He was pretty hammered that night. Interesting dude.

by talonk on Dec 6, 2011 2:24 AM EST up reply actions

Trememndous, indeed!

Hypothetically speaking, how would I obtain a frameable copy of this?

by baerga1 on Dec 2, 2011 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Probably tweet at the SI_Vault guy. There might be some process for SI to sell hi-res digital versions that you could have printed.

by afh4 on Dec 2, 2011 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Okay thanks. This is now the second good reason I have encountered in the last week to join twitter. I guess I actually have to consider it now… yikes.

Trying my best to set nostalgia aside, those uniforms really do look pretty sweet, right?

by baerga1 on Dec 2, 2011 1:57 PM EST reply actions

They were nice, but I’d prefer a white or cream 70s version with the funky type rather than the block lettering.

by emd2k3 on Dec 2, 2011 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

As Choo and I said above, they are fantastic!

by johnf34 on Dec 2, 2011 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

I would flag for the stupid pajama pants. Stirrups, please.

by emd2k3 on Dec 7, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think ANY uni should have pants that aren’t stirrups or long socks.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 7, 2011 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t do this to me! I’m tearing up..sniff, sniff.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Dec 2, 2011 6:36 PM EST reply actions

That’s not Albert Belle.

That’s Joey.

You are reading my signature.

Joey drank Jack.
Albert ate Joey.
