Fractured his elbow on November 5th, had surgery in Cleveland on the 15th. Recovery time expected to be 5-7 months. Well...that sucks

Wow…TJ surgery, then you fracture the same elbow?

by Ryan on Dec 6, 2011 3:20 PM EST reply actions

Was thinking the exact same thing. Ouch.

Lofgren, Rondon, Miller… Blah, blah, blah

At least we don’t have to worry about those White, Pomeranz and Gardner guys anymore

Load off my mind.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 6, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Also, let it be known that I have a serious curse. Pitchers I have liked more than most over the years; Andrew Brown, JD Martin, Joey Mahalic, Santo Frias, Scott Lews, David Huff, Hector Rondon…..

by APV on Dec 6, 2011 3:37 PM EST reply actions

Why Mahalic out of that group? Just curious, as a Portland native I followed him a bit, just hoping, but….

by pdxtribefan on Dec 6, 2011 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

He was once very young with very high GB-rates and improving (though still poor) K-rates. Then he got injured and never got better.

by APV on Dec 6, 2011 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

I had an Andrew Brown thing going on for a while & thought he was much better than FCab who I did not like. Scout scuttlebutt was that he was “soft”. due to home schooling..

by stuart dean on Dec 6, 2011 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Also (final one), FIRE LONNIE SOLOFF AND JAMES QUINLAN (rehab coordinator)!!! Not necessarily because they have anything to do with this, but it would just seem to provide the psychological equivalent of drowning a locker room in bleach that has been the subject of repeated staph infections.

by APV on Dec 6, 2011 3:47 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

I’ve wanted to ditch Soloff (despite the reputation) for a couple years now.

by emd2k3 on Dec 6, 2011 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Pitchers get hurt. Which is why you trade them for Ubaldo Jiminez. And why you don’t trade the ones who aren’t injured with 1.5 years left on their contract for young pitchers who get injured…

by Cols714 on Dec 6, 2011 9:49 PM EST reply actions

And why you don’t trade the ones who aren’t injured with 1.5 years left on their contract for young pitchers who get injured…

Separate argument. For all you know, one of those pitchers could have been a Ubaldo Jimenez.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 7, 2011 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

So you’re saying don’t trade Colon for Sizemore, Phillips, and Lee. Makes sense.

by callmrplow on Dec 7, 2011 11:21 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, Phillips, the headliner in that trade was a pitcher. I’d forgotten.

by Cols714 on Dec 7, 2011 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Huh?

Brandon Phillips
Lee Stevens

Neither is a pitcher.

by emd2k3 on Dec 7, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

I heard Cliff Lee was a pitcher.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 7, 2011 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

Do you read or just try to make snappy comments? The obvious point I was making was that trading Cliff Lee for Jason Knapp and Carlos Carrasco (the two principle guys) was dumb.

However, trading Colon for what was either the #1 or #2 position prospect in baseball was not dumb.

Now I’m sure we’ll see 50 or so comments debating whether or not the main players in the trader were Carrasco and Knapp or Donald and Marson.

by Cols714 on Dec 7, 2011 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry about the do you read comment.

by Cols714 on Dec 7, 2011 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Apology accepted.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 8, 2011 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

You made a blanket statement which was refuted. Thought it was fair.

by Roger Dorn on Dec 7, 2011 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

I think I need to stop talking about the Cliff Lee deal. That will probably happen soon. I hope. Unless of course Jason Donald and Lou Marson turn into All Stars…

by Cols714 on Dec 7, 2011 2:27 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

You need to drop it unless you’re willing to compare it to its contemporary deals—the other Lee trade, the Greinke trade, etc. Ace pitchers’ trade market value is not what fans perceive it to be.

by afh4 on Dec 8, 2011 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not comparing it to any deals. Getting a utility infielder and backup catcher for an ace pitcher just doesn’t seem like enough.

by Cols714 on Dec 8, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not comparing it to any deals.

Then you’re doing it wrong.

by afh4 on Dec 8, 2011 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

If you think getting a utility infielder and backup catcher for an ace pitcher is enough, then you are doing it wrong.

by Cols714 on Dec 8, 2011 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

This has nothing to do with the Lee trade, or any other particular trade.

The standard of discourse here is high—this is not a board that exists for any user to come and repeatedly post about transactions not “seeming” or “feeling” like enough, unless they’re doing it in a way that’s particularly interesting or amusing. The argument needs to be cogent and hold water or else it’s a waste of time and bandwidth.

If your interest is in telling others how things “seem” to you, you’re not meeting the standard. There are plenty of message board spaces that will allow you to do that endlessly. If you do it here, we won’t ban you for it, but we will keep doing exactly what I’m doing here: asking you to raise your level of discourse.

If only the real world was up to LGT’s standards … well it’d be a better place.

I like ex-Phillies prospects.

Let me get this straight, I say this “If you think getting a utility infielder and backup catcher for an ace pitcher is enough, then you are doing it wrong”

And you are going to ban me? This was in direct response to a post above me.

by afh4 on Dec 8, 2011 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not that. The argument is a straw man. If Shapiro said “we are trading Cliff Lee for a utility infielder and backup catcher and two injured minor-league pitchers with no upside,” there would be a point to this. I happen to like Carrasco, he looked fantastic in June, I even started wondering if he looked better than Masterson. Knapp, who knows, but we took a shot on a big arm. That was the deal. Not a utility infielder and a backup catcher.
No one minds calling something that sucks sucky. Establish that with a persuasive argument and we’ll all pile on calling it sucky too. Keep the faith. We like a little paprika on top, but we want to taste the meatloaf too.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Dec 9, 2011 4:34 AM EST up reply actions

Ha! Great, great scene. Goes from side-splitting and absurd—to mean and cringe-inducing, in a heartbeat. MA! THE MEATLOAF! WE WANT IT!

Made me swear off hang-gliding though.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Dec 10, 2011 9:06 AM EST up reply actions

Carrasco doesn’t count?

by woodsmeister on Dec 8, 2011 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

I first saw this on MLBTR (oh, shut up) and it said “five to seven years’ recovery.” It struck me as a pretty smart DFA.

Though I look right at home, I still feel like an exile

by Manhattan Tribe Fan on Dec 6, 2011 11:13 PM EST reply actions

In his comments yesterday, Antonetti said it is likely more like 6-9 months recovery

by APV on Dec 7, 2011 8:34 AM EST reply actions

CHAMPIONSHIP

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 7, 2011 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, especially considering that there’s one every year.

by Joel D on Dec 7, 2011 12:07 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

So, ye of much more wisdom than I, why does he get DFA’d instead of going (or staying) on the 60-day DL?

by YoDaddyWags on Dec 7, 2011 11:09 AM EST reply actions

No 60-day DL in the offseason. If he clears waivers he is still under team control and cannot refuse an assignment to the minors. So this isn’t a “getting rid” of Rondon move, it is an “officially removing him from the major league roster” move, which exposes him to waivers.

by APV on Dec 7, 2011 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

BNOW WE HAVE ROOM FOR PUJOLES IF DOLAN INT CHEAP!

by JulioBernazard on Dec 7, 2011 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Also, doesn’t he also stop burning options. Or better put, won’t he avoid having to be optioned down in the spring.

by hans on Dec 7, 2011 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

Can’t be optioned if you’re not on a roster.

by Brick. on Dec 8, 2011 9:32 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Rondon should have one, and possibly two (because of injury), options remaining. But I think he is eligible for minor league free agency after 2012.

by APV on Dec 8, 2011 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

… unless we put him back on the 40-man.

by Jay on Dec 8, 2011 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, and assuming no further injury, I’d guess he’d get in about a half season in the minors this year. Which coming off of TJ anyways, would probably be where we’d expect him. I can see them roster him then if he avoids another injury.

by hans on Dec 8, 2011 11:56 PM EST up reply actions

Many Twitter reports that Rondon has officially cleared waivers and been outrighted to Columbus.

by woodsmeister on Dec 8, 2011 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Thus begins his descent into anonymity.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

by USSChoo on Dec 8, 2011 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunate circumstances, but more proof that the Indians do a nice job every year with roster management.
