Pujols signs 10-year deal with Angels
10 years, at least $250 million. Could this lead to the Indians going after Morales or Trumbo?

Sheesh, now Sherman’s saying CJ Wilson to the Angels as well. They’re really embracing the “Treat Yo Self” mantra along with the Marlins.

Angles are going to be tough next year. Must be nice to be in a large market where you can do things like this instead of discussing signing bargain basement guys.
I imagine the Pujols deal will work out pretty well for them until about year 8 or so. But by then they will have got their money’s worth.
I’ve always thought obtuse to be the toughest of the lot.

I don’t know, the Picts and the Jutes should give them a run for the Dangeld.

Wow, this really leaves the Cardinals holding a bag of feces. I wonder if they panic sign someone or just use 2012 to regroup?

How long till the Cardinals entering the Prince Fielder market rumors start?

So by my calculcations, the Angels have already to committed to at least a $140M payroll for 2012, just about what their payroll was last season. This is before adding arbitration-eligible and pre-arbitration contract.
Angels never met a bad contract they didn’t immediately sleep with

Almost impossible to imagine this looking good for the Angels even 5 years into the future, let alone 10. They better hope he gives them a few titles in the next couple of seasons.
Maybe. I think it’s a good deal for them. They get the best 1B in baseball for the next decade. He probably won’t be the best in baseball for very much longer, but by the end of the contract they get to watch him chase down some records while probably still providing adequate production.
They clearly have the money, why not spend it?
Yeah…for this ti look good the Angels either need to get a few World Series titles out of it, or Pujols has to age like Bonds/Aaron/Mays.

Which can’t be expected of any player but there has to be some acknowledgment that Pujols, by virtue of his absolute, undeniable, inner-circle status, might have a better chance than some.
Doesn’t mean I would’ve done the deal but if you’re going to bet on anyone to age like Mays, might as well be one of the three or four best hitters of the last two decades.
I think the key is the former…the Angels need to win titles. Even with Pujols’ skills, the former is a more likely outcome. Mays, Aaron and Bonds all seem, based on their early career, to be far more athletic than Pujols.
I didn’t ever see those guys play, but I think Pujols is sort of underrated as an athlete. He’s probably as athletic a first basemen as you’ll find, no?
Again, I’m not really defending this deal, just musing.
Yeah, didn’t he even play a little 3B last season?

So it looks like the Angels are on tap for something around $120M for seven guys entering next season (Pujols, Wells, Hunter, Wilson, Weaver, Haren, Santana).
@Jon_Heyman Got to admire cj wilson for taking less to go home. Of course $75M buys a lot of straight edges
Jon Heyman: not just out of touch with baseball
To be fair, $75 mil DOES go a lot further when you’re not spending it on alcohol and drugs.

All those straight edges will certainly come in handy with the Angles.

This is what brings you out of hiding, huh?
Did you have a kid or something? Just started to sleep through the night?
A combination of events, some planned and others unexpected, kept me away for all but reading home page articles (and recommended fanposts) and catching up on Indians’ news. I would occasionally do a bit of lurking during game threads but mostly was able to only squeeze in listening to games while preparing for my marriage and managing a busier work schedule. And then there was the matter of dealing with tropical storm Irene at our country house in the Catskills.
I’ll try and be around more and active. I do miss this community.

I drove from Margaretville to Phoenicia on Route 28 after the leaves had dropped and you could see deep into the woods. It looked like a tornado had exploded a trailer park, there was so much debris.
The amount of damage is pretty staggering in some places. As you drive along the Esopus on Rt. 28, the size of some of the tree jams that collected around bridges and river bends does not seem possible.
We were extremely fortunate overall as the flood crested at a level where I was able to quickly build a diversion wall out of many cinder blocks stacked 2 high and that was just enough to keep water from overflowing and entering the main house. The pool got wiped out as did our lower deck and a fair sized chunk of the yard got washed away; many trees came down across the stream and are going to be a difficult and lingering problem/project as they are hung up in other trees on our property.
Many of our neighbors suffered much worse damage.
Has FEMA been of any assistance? In 2006, when Sullivan, Delaware and many other counties got hammered with flooding, New York State set up a special fund to distribute aid to affected communities, which became more useful to many than FEMA—which is definitely an agency in need of psychological intervention. I don’t expect the state, broke as it is now, to have set up any similar fund this time.
I know we need an upgrade, but I’m not all that interested in Trumbo, especially for what I figure they’d be asking. His OBP is extremely underwhelming. He fields and runs the bases better than LaPorta, but at the dish, the difference is a lot smaller than I thought.
I just wonder how realistic 3B is, and how many at bats he would get with Pujols/Morales obviously everydayers at 1B/DH.
Maybe there’s a chance they try to clear some at-bats in an also crowded outfield? Hunter is pricey… Is Bourjos out of the question?
Wouldn’t either Morales or Trumbo have to go? I can’t imagine keeping both.
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
oooh my anti-Mark Trumbo campaign can start again

Rumors are that the Marlins actually offered 10/275, but the lack of the no-trade was the deal breaker.
Apparently lack of NTC was killer in Wilson offer. You think people have caught on to the Marlins MO yet?
Wonder what the real money difference accounts when you factor in no state tax versus Florida versus California state taxes.
Well, if you assume an average personal income tax rate of 6% (which is roughly right for the midwest (assuming he had taken StL’s offer and stayed in the midwest) and apply that strictly to the full amount of $275mil, that’s a savings of $16.5mil had he instead sign with Miami. That’s pretty basic without factoring his potential Federal AGI, but a rough idea for state savings.
Fear the Fedora.

Fangraphs has had some recent articles on contract differences due to state taxes. I bet they’ll post something on the Pujols deal.

I just heard something about a deal involving Ike Davis and Niese. Would be crazy if that was the deal Antonetti was hinting at a couple days ago.

I’m going to be lazy and ignorant and assume this is about Luis Pujols. If so, Marson’s comp article just got significantly less depressing.
I read this whole thread making sure this joke wasn’t made yet before I posted it.

Obviously his numbers are still outstanding, but I didn’t realize until I looked here that pretty much all of Pujols’ peripheral numbers are on a 3+ year downward trend. This deal will work out great….
I remember Joe Pos writing that almost the entire drop in walk rate comes from a drop in intentional walks.
To conclude this conversation with myself, I went and found the numbers.
Walk rate with intentional walks:
2010: 15%
2011: 9%
Walk rate without intentional walks:
2010: 10%
2011: 7%
So intentional walks account for about half the difference. I concede half of my point.
I don’t think so. He wants to stay where he signs. That’s the problem with he had with his FLorida deal. They wouldn’t offer a no trade clause.
No-trade clause isn’t about staying where you sign. It’s about achieving even more leverage to extract more money just for the hell of it.
I mean, hell, it’s not his hometown, and he didn’t give them a discount. He should be happy to play in Pittsburgh if that’s where they want to send him, and that’s not even going to happen anyway.

It’s also kind of hard to imagine they’d want — or be able — to trade him in the first five years of that contract, and after that he’s a 10-5 guy.
