Confirmed: LHP Jeremy Sowers (Indians' top pick in 2004) underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on Monday. He's out 9-12 months...
Sowers will rehab at home in Virginia instead of w/ team in Ariz. this spring. Spent last season w/ AAA Columbus. Still under club control.
Two separate tweets from Bastian. Sowers' career has somehow found a new, depressing low. His choice to be in VA instead of AZ strikes me as odd. It's probably not useful to read anything into it, though.

The injury was apparently sustained in November 2006.

Actually, right now about the best that can be done is a Zen clap.

Could this explain the OC signing?

Sarcasm. It seems to be as good a reason as anything else we’ve heard…

I don’t see it as depressing. I see it as good news or irrelevant.
Sowers has been off the 40-man roster for almost a year now, and while he made 22 starts in the majors in 2009, the fact that he did was a sign of our surrender, not of his relevance. His relevance has been somewhere just south of Anthony Reyes (and just north of Tomo Ohka) for a couple years now.
Incidentally, the fact that he’s still technically under club control is irrelevant. He’ll be a minor league free agent in December, after we decline to add him back to the 40-man fresh off his rehab, and after he passes through the Rule 5 draft unselected (again).
There is zero chance that we’ll decide to add him back to the 40-man to avoid his minor league free agency. If he’s back in Columbus next season, it will be because he trusts the organization and feels that we still lack meaningful starting depth.
