Around SBN: Watch Out For Cowboys UDFA Tim Benford

For those keeping track:

• Victor Martinez — Rolls Royce
• Justin Verlander — Ferrari
• Miguel Cabrera — 2008 Ford Interceptor

Reportedly, he kept right on drinking whiskey out of the bottle in front of the officer who pulled him over.

Speaking of spirits, that is a $75 bottle of Whisky.

A jackass like that should really be playing in New York.

Yipes. I’m glad he didn’t hurt anybody.

You stay classy Miguel.

He’s a throwback.

This Tiger team has a real shot of not winning 85 games.

Wow, didn’t he make a big deal about drying out, especially as it helped him turn around last year?

I think his mugshot is the best part:

LOL best mugshot I’ve seen since Nick Nolte’s.

Adam Foote still blows!

And yet who among us wouldn’t want him playing 1st and batting 4th for the Tribe this year?

by DixonCayne on Feb 17, 2011 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Not me. He’d set a bad example for the young players.

by odradek on Feb 17, 2011 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

The Gator4Taters may outperform him this year.

by JulioBernazard on Feb 18, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

According to Mike Royko, paddy wagon is considered an ethnic pejorative.

by odradek on Feb 17, 2011 7:51 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, but it was true. ; )

by emd2k3 on Feb 17, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

That’s also what Royko said.

by odradek on Feb 18, 2011 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Oof. And busted by Royko, my old hero!

Speak up friends of Ireland, but I’ve never known my Irish friends—a stack this high, as Eric Wedge might say— to get hot and bothered by terms like this, taking it all in good fun. I’m happy to be convinced of my insensitivity and change accordingly. Don’t want to cause a cock-up.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Feb 18, 2011 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think the general attitude of my Irish brethren to Irish jokes is that we could really care less.

"Spring Training wins are good for the soul."

by USSChoo on Feb 18, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Rather than caring less, piling on seems more the norm, a great revelry in the sparring.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Feb 18, 2011 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe I’m not quite Irish enough for that, but I couldn’t disagree with you.

"Spring Training wins are good for the soul."

by USSChoo on Feb 18, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I think the Irish are more likely to be proud of the term “paddy wagon” than not. It’s a part of our anti-heroic traditions.

It’s very hard to pinpoint the precise event that leads to the cock-ups.

“One thing led to another, officer.”

by Bogalusa Bomber on Feb 18, 2011 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

“Get your Irish up.” There’s a good solid phrase you don’t hear enough.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Feb 18, 2011 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

By the same token, nobody tells more jokes about Jewish people than Jewish people … but that doesn’t mean I want to hear you tell any of those jokes. So I’ll take a pass on “paddywagon” from now on. It’s just not at all important to me to use the word — there are tens of thousands of other words — so I’ll skip it.
