Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Friday trivia

Two baseball trivia questions for Friday afternoon...

Star-divide

1. Three players have hit a home run in the Major Leagues before their 20th birthday and after their 40th birthday - who are they?

2. Two player have won a game in the Major Leagues before their 20th birthday and after their 40th birthday - who are they?

Starlin Castro of the Cubs was the youngest player in either league last year, and he turned 20 shortly before the season started, so there was nobody from last year's freshman class who could ever qualify for either of these lists.

One of the hitters is the now-retired Gary Sheffield

Another one should be Ty Cobb

I think I know the third, but it is a tough one and I’ll leave it a mystery for now

Never hit one last year so he missed out.

Ruth just missed it to. Played 5 games at age 19 but no HRs. Did HR at age 40.

Off the top of my head going to say Jesse Orosco for #2. My other guess was Nolan Ryan like millionairesrow.

by roywhitby on Feb 18, 2011 2:01 PM EST reply actions

Nolan Ryan is an excellent guess, but he was 0-1 as a teenager.

Shockingly, Orosco didn’t make the majors until age 22, and then didn’t pitch in the bigs at age 23, making his 24 seasons even more impressive.

Bert Blyleven!!!

That’s right.

The other pitcher wasn’t anywhere near as good as Bert.

I was using adjusted wins to find it and after 150 I gave up on the 2nd one.

Mike Morgan

Yep. Bonus baby Mike Morgan won a game for the A’s as a teenager, and hung around until his 40’s.

How close was maddux? I was gonna guess him but then saw that all the pitchers had already been guessed.

Herb Pennock

Dang, there are actually three. Pennock is correct as well.

I cheated on wiki answers. I have work to do and I couldn’t let it go.

I should say I knew Blyleven and found the answer to the other two on wiki answers.
