The Final Spots: Infield

Welcome back?

Assuming that Asdrubal exited the game yesterday only on account of a knee cramp (seriously—a knee cramp?), the Indians have their 1B, 2B, and SS in LaPorta, Cabrera, and Cabrera. 3B is back to an open competition with the news of Jason Donald's hand fracture.

The Indians will likely go with a conventional roster arrangement: twelve pitchers and four bench spots. Two of those spots will go to an outfielder (Travis Buck seems the obvious choice, according to your votes) and a backup catcher, leaving the other two spots for infield defensive replacements, bench bats, or, likely, one of each. Also, before I get too far into this, it's worth noting that Buck has played six innings at 1B this spring and he could see time there this season if he makes the team. The Tribe could still make a roster pickup, but it seems increasingly likely that the following group will yield the starting 3B, a defensive infielder, and a pinch hitting option.

Star-divide

  • Adam Everett (31 ABs: .355/.459/.355) Jay has posited that Everett is a minor league version of Orlando Cabrera, a veteran who's going to provide stability in Columbus with a chance to reach the majors if injuries strike the major league middle infield. I think that makes some sense—because Orlando is a natural shortstop, there's no motivation to carry another guy who can spell Asdrubal regularly. Everett's played mostly at short this spring, but he's also had uneventful runs at second and third. His real issue, of course, is that he's not on the forty man.
  • Jayson Nix (24 ABs: .125/.250/.292) ,  Luis Valbuena (37 ABs: .216/.326/.541) Valbuena and Nix appear to be in direct competition for the utility infielder spot. Unless the Indians decide to go off the 40 to find a backup, Nix and Valbuena are the only rostered non-starters who have appeared at 2B, SS, and 3B in their major league careers. This spring, however, has been a different story—Valbuena's played all three of those spots, with 40+ innings at 3B and SS and only eleven at the keystone. In contrast, Nix has only played 2B. Neither's bat is much to dream on at this point: Luis bats lefty, Nix righty, and the most we can hope for is a little bit of pop from either.
  • Cord Phelps (19 ABs: .211/.348/.263) An unimpressive spring hasn't gotten Phelps demoted yet but, a familiar refrain, he's not on the forty man roster. Jay has pointed out that Phelps seems a prime candidate for the Marson treatment, wherein a young player with limited potential is forced to the majors before his time in order to fill a roster hole. That would be an easier argument to make if Cord didn't need to be rostered or if reports on his defense at third were good. As it stands, he's barely appeared at 3B and it looks like the Indians view him as primarily a 2B—it's going to be hard to carve out a utility career with an average glove only at second. If he can play a little outfield, he might become a Joe Inglett type
  • Jordan Brown (23 ABs: .261/.320/.391),  Shelley Duncan (32 ABs: .313/.333/..500) If the Indians want to carry a bench bat, these are the two gentlemen still in camp who fit that mold. Duncan is the righty, Brown the lefty. Too bad for Jordan, he's not on the forty. If the Indians want to keep a little thump around for pinch hitting, playing a little corner outfield, and occasionally spelling at first, Duncan seems way out in front.
  • Jack Hannahan (38 ABs: .368/.478/.474) As Paul pointed out in his excellent rundown of the Indians third base vortex, Hannahan is unlikely to hit in the majors—he's played a lot of games in both the bigs and AAA without ever showing much. However, there's no denying that he's a third baseman, which sounds stupid until you realize that you could assert some Indians third baseman of recent vintage were not. actually, third basemen. The Indians have treated him as a 3B only guy, with the majority of his innings coming at the hot corner.

As Paul made clear in the piece linked above, there's a lot of moving parts in the Indians infield competition. With Donald down, the Indians have to make someone the starting third basemen and only Valbuena and Hannahan have seen significant action there this spring. Naming Valbuena the starter at third would allow the Indians to carry Nix as the utility player, saving any roster shenanigans, however, with Nix as the utility, who becomes the plausible backup at 3B? It's either Nix, who the Indians aren't playing there, or a Cabrera (seems unlikely). More likely, in my view, is Valbuena breaking as the utility infielder and Hannahan finding his way onto the roster so he can start at 3B until Donald returns. With those two and the Cabreras, you've minimally got two guys each for 3B, 2B, and SS and you've improved the infield defense (a suppose priority). Throw in the fact that Luis is the only lefty competing for an infield job (Asdrubal hits switch), and it seems like a done deal. Hannahan's roster spot likely comes at the expense of Nix.

There's admittedly some speculation in that scenario, as it seems to me that the Indians have deprioritized Nix in comparison to Hannahan and Valbuena. Nix never seemed in the race for the 3B job and Acta explicitly said Jayson was competing for the starting job at 2B, a competition that was over before it began—Cabrera walked in like it was his job and everyone seemed to nod and agree. Nix has gotten only 60% of the ABs that Valbuena and Hannahan have and, with Orlando the starter at second, that makes sense—might as well give the ABs to the veteran preparing for his starting role.

The other bench job, the one about the bat, isn't very interesting to me. I think the Indians have rightly assessed that Shelley Duncan has a little bit of power, which is at least sort of fun. Beyond that, I think the Indians view Duncan as a good clubhouse guy and don't see the value of making a roster move to get Brown's powerless bat on the bench, even if it is from the more advantageous side. Nix is a dark horse candidate as a bench bat, as he basically matched Duncan's slugging during his 2010 Cleveland tenure, but my gut says it's Duncan.

Right now, Hannahan seems like the best bet at 3B. If he makes the team, I see Nix getting DFA’d. He can only play decent defense at one position, which is already taken. His only real value to the team is his home run power, but even Valbuena is hitting better. Plus, Acta said Nix was competing for the starting 2B job, and with Orlando Cabrera on the team, there’s no competition there; Nix has no chance. If Hannahan performs well, he can be kept when Donald comes back, and maybe they can option Valbuena. And I can’t really see Everett in a utility role. He either starts at AAA or gets released.

by engtribe48 on Mar 22, 2011 3:22 AM EDT reply actions

So you feel, basically, that Nix has only been kept around for depth related to spring injuries.

I have trouble seeing the argument for Valbuena over Nix. If he’s still considered young and developing, he surely can’t develop anything as a utility man in the majors. As a present-tense talent, he’s of no real use on the roster.

by Jay on Mar 22, 2011 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reasons I would pick Valbuena over Nix are that Valbuena can play 3B and he has options remaining. So once Donald comes back, Valbuena could be optioned. Nix would be much more limited in utility and is out of options. As far as development, Valbuena may not have much of a future with the team. There are much better prospects behind him, so once he’s out of options, that may be it for him.

by engtribe48 on Mar 23, 2011 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Valbuena’s option is only an asset if we need a 40-man spot. If we can keep both, of course you’d rather do that — wouldn’t you agree?

I think Nix has gotten an overly harsh rap at third base. It was a trial by fire, and if he’s done any work at all on the position in the offseason, I supsect he’d be fine over there. Unless Valbuena’s luck has been extraordinarily bad, he’s a substantially worse hitter than Nix, and offense does count.

by Jay on Mar 23, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Nix a substantially better hitter than Valbuena? Luis is 25 years old, three years younger than Jayson. He’s slugged .459 in AAA, which is better than Nix. In 2009 he had a .714 OPS at second base (OPS+ of 90), with 25 doubles in 103 games. Isn’t there more upside to Valbuena than to Nix?

by odradek on Mar 23, 2011 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Valbuena has fairly doggedly set about proving that he can’t hit in the majors anything like he hits in Triple-A — you could say that his production has been lost in translation.

Having said that, you probably have caught me in a classic expectations fallacy. Valbuena has disappointed us, while Nix came out of nowhere and started clobbering home runs. Objectively? Nix looks like the better hitter, but not by much.

by Jay on Mar 23, 2011 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I must be missing something. In 2009, in his age 23 season, Valbuena hit .250/.298/.416 in the major leagues. Not great, obviously, but he showed something over those 398 plate appearances. Last year was admittedly a bust, but Valbuena’s 2009 was better than Nix’s three-year record in the majors. And he’s three years younger than Nix.

Valbuena’s extreme home-and-away 2010 splits (home: .143/.223/.193; away: .244/.325/.326) suggest he might have been spending too much time in the Flats with Jose Mesa, or something.

We all saw a lot of weak demoralized grounders hit to second base last year. But every so often the ball would jump off Valbuena’s bat. He hit a double off Jake Peavy last year on June 5 that opened my eyes.

I think you’d be nuts to go with Nix when Valbuena is still around. I don’t understand why so many have written him off.

by odradek on Mar 23, 2011 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He “hammered” a double today over the right fielders head. Even Underwood’s call sounded exciting. On the other hand, Arizona weather and bad pitching may have played a part today as there were 4 triples and 6 doubles between both teams.

I have to say, though, that I am in agreement with you as to not quite understanding the low regard for Valbuena as compared to Nix.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Mar 23, 2011 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Here’s the explanation: Nobody cares enough about Nix to hold him in low regard. Seriously, that’s the reason.

by Jay on Mar 24, 2011 12:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ll admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Valbuena, but I have to agree that he has more upside than Nix. Plus, if Nix gets DFA’d and Valbuena makes the team (albeit in a utility role) to start the year, you’re throwing a bone to Mark Shapiro because he loves Valbuena.

by engtribe48 on Mar 24, 2011 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Why do we care about throwing a bone to Shapiro?

by Jay on Mar 24, 2011 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

If Shapiro isn’t happy, then he’ll press Antonetti to do something even more stupid.

Valbuena was pretty shaky at 3B last year. Probably a little better than Nix, but Nix has assumedly gotten a little better since then.

If Josh Rodriguez gets offered back to the Tribe would he leapfrog both Valbuena and Nix for that Utility job?

by The DiaTriber on Mar 23, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Given that he is not on the 40-man, I’d say no

by APV on Mar 23, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

It currently wouldn’t be a problem to put him there. If Valbuena beats Nix, Nix is DFAed. Crowe’s injury frees up Buck to be added, thus leaving the 40man at 39. Some have talked about putting Phillips there, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Also, Rondon will be on the 60 day, most likely to be joined by Weglarz, which potentially frees up two more spots. Unless I’ve got something wrong in there.

I’m assuming you saw this that I just found.

The Indians expect to get infielder Josh Rodriguez, the first pick in December’s Rule 5 draft, back from the Pirates before the end of camp. Rodriguez played shortstop and second base for Class AAA Columbus last year and the Indians are in dire need of upper level shortstops.

JoshRod has a 656 OPS in 26 ST ABs w/ PIT.

So you think that Marson can’t get enough at-bats in Cleveland in order to justify his staying?

by InfiniteMonkeyTypists on Mar 22, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

He probably can, and if there are roster space concerns I’d be fine with that, but I’d just assume see him play regularly. There is no one else who needs everyday time at catcher in Columbus.

I’d go with that with the only difference being Marson instead of Phillips, because I don’t think I can take Paul Phillips in the lineup when Santana is going to head down to 1B, as infrequently as it may be.

by The DiaTriber on Mar 22, 2011 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too, but I’d much rather bring up Marson later after he’s been swinging the bat awhile. I fully expect him to be in Cleveland to stay at some point this year.

This is just the opening day 25. The Columbus shuttle will begin very shortly after.

by mcrose on Mar 22, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Who comes off the 40 for Phillips? I’m assuming Buck takes Crowe’s spot when he goes on the 60day DL, while Hannahan takes Nix’s when he is DFAed. I don’t see any candidates that you would want to remove without fear of losing.

Hoynes made the point in his podcast today that even if Marson starts hitting in Columbus, when he comes back up, it will be in a backup role with limited at bats. Why not let him become accustomed to that role. He can probably play twice a week as they take it easy on Santana, at least initially

If Marson ever starts to hit, he could be a starter somewhere, but probably not in Cleveland.

He might still be with the team as a non-roster player. The article didn’t say that he’d been assigned to minor league camp, just that he’d been outrighted off the 40-man roster. Even if he had been, though, they could still call him up to the big league camp, as they’ve done with some of their minor leaguers.

by APV on Mar 23, 2011 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

It is not free content, but BP has its injury prediction piece up on the Indians. I really like the new guy BP has essentially replacing Will Carroll’s beat, Corey Dawkins. The short recap is that the Indians have a lot of positional players with questionable health (Sizemore, Cabrera, Choo, Santana, Hafner, Kearns, Donald), but what looks to be an extremely durable pitching staff.

by APV on Mar 24, 2011 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

The names you listed are no-brainers; all are coming off recent injuries or have long injury history. As for pitching, I guess injuries already separated the weak from the strong.

(BTW, why is this posted in a thread about infielders?)

It’s getting harder and harder to think of our infield as comparable to one with Jacoby, Franco, Bernazard, and Tabler (or even Jacoby, Fermin, Browne and O’Brien).
