Despite his .364/.447/.545 line, Andy is not going to start the season in Pittsburgh.

Just saw him in Kissimmee a couple of days ago versus the Astros. Had some nice at-bats, and 2 good plays in the field, but missed one play at 1b.
They had Steve Pearce at 3b. Alvarez didn’t make the trip.
This is brutal. The worst news I’ve had in weeks.

This doesn’t really surprise me. I think part of the below quote from Neal Huntington a week ago is telling:
“Andy’s certainly ahead of the other three defensively,” Huntington said. “Andy’s done a nice job with the bat. He’s hit the pitches he’s supposed to hit and made the catches he’s supposed to make.”
In other words, if the ball is on the inner half of the plate, he’s fine. If not, he’s in trouble. Not really news, we saw that for 5 years.
By the way, I had a Marte flashback when watching one of the Tribe’s spring training games over a week ago. Massive pulling off the ball, not remotely covering the outer portion of the plate. But it wasn’t Marte, it was Matt LaPorta. Not good.
I watched the game today on MLB.tv.
LaPorta continues to look horrible. He wraps the bat around his head during his load, and then he can’t get to the ball in time. I’m no swing expert, but I’ve said all along, he hits “around” the ball too often. Plenty of guys make a career out of being a pull hitter. T
he frustrating thing about LaPorta is we’ve seen him drive the ball to CF. If it’s there once, you know it’s hidden in there somewhere. Just need Nunnally to find a way to bring it out more regularly.
Meanwhile, Nunnally keeps spending his time making Choo into a ‘power hitter’ … or are they finally filing that one?
