It's new, it's fresh, it's a little drunk and a lot giddy. Don't know if Josh Tomlin can get major league hitters out, but he doesn't seem to have much trouble with the Mariners.

Much of the giddiness, of course, comes from the discovery of the Hammy overlay feature.

Still browsing the original thread.
Surprised that the Jack WIlson comments didn’t prompt the obvious comparison, i.e., to Wedge’s bizarre issues handling of Peralta.
I can’t speak for many others but I’m trying to repress the Wedge era. 2007 aside.

Got this e-mail from a clueless (but die-hard) Tiger fan yesterday:
“Oh, and I REALLY like Peralta. What he lacks in range, he makes up for in good positioning. And with Inge, he can cheat up the middle. Plus, his offense is a huge bonus. Boy can hit! "
My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts.
The Nagy-Tomlin comparison just is not there. Nagy had significantly better stuff, and when he lost some of it, he aggravated the problem by being a miserable nibbler. Tomlin doesn’t have the stuff but just goes right after guys. They’re really very different.
Yes, although Byrd himself wasn’t this healthy or effective at Tomlin’s age.
Who knows, maybe his “craftiness ceiling” is even higher than this.

The better question is whether Tomlin constantly looks like his dog just died.
We always used to call Nagy “Sad Sack” for that very reason.
Hell, I called him “Ol’ Sad Sack Sourpuss”, but “Sad Sack”? No way.

Is my disdain for Jack Cust unjustified given how marginal a career he’s had?

He hit a walk-off on Ferd Cabrera a few years ago when Borowski was pulled in the midst of a big blow-up, so I think it is justified.

No, that’s a commensalism relationship—Wedge is the shark to Gimenez’s remora. It’s not the same as Gimenez being an embedded organelle inside of Wedge.

Hamilton asserting that Ichiro is selfish b/c he concentrates on getting base hits, not driving in runs.
??
I just thought it was a lousy play. I can’t imagine he did it thinking he could’ve just as easily hit a single.
If a bunt really was his best chance for a hit, it makes sense. It just seemed like a bit of a cop-out. Almost like, well, let’s try this, if it doesn’t work out then oh-well.
Well, as you pointed out, he shouldn’t be bunting for a hit at all. But, that’s probably as much on coaches as him.
As if a Mariners coach can tell Ichiro not to bunt! As if!

I’m a little concerned about the fact that Raffy, Sipp, and (assuming it’s still a save situation) Pure Rage will have, after this game, pitched in over half of the games this season.
At this rate, their arms will be dead by July.
But think of all the wins?!?!

Ok. Nicely done Mr. Sipp. Now let’s score a few more runs just because.
I'm emotional about my glove...
Rage hit arbitration as a Super 2 this season. He’s under control through 2014.
Sipp will be a Super 2 and borderline arbitration guy at the end of this season. Under control through 2015.
Rafael was a Super 2 arbitration guy last season, under control through 2013.
Odd that all three are Super 2 arbitration guys.
I dislike Brandon League b/c he was acquired for a starter. Starter for reliever trades make me crazy.

They do let the kids run the bases after the Sunday afternoon games.

Friend of mine said he was in tears watching his two boys do it. For whatever reason, the kids love it, the parents love it. Just like American Idol, it can’t be denied.
My brother let me walk his three-year old around the bases just so I could do it.
My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts.
Yeah, did the “parents and kids run the bases” thing a couple of seasons back with my niece. Admittedly, there was a LOT of traffic, so there was zero running going on, but it was really cool to walk through the bowels of the park and onto the track.

"Most players will tell you that even when they're 100%, they're not really 100% ... if that makes sense."
At spring training a few years back they had a thing where fans could go out on the field and run around and play catch with each other. That was pretty, pretty, pretty cool. As adults we had a blast.
I'm emotional about my glove...
I’ve grown up with cricket in New Zealand, where the peak of the sport is international competition. Even during some of our biggest matches, say, NZ vs Australia, or NZ vs England, it is usual for fans of all ages to be allowed on the playing field during lunch breaks to play catch, to bat and bowl, or just to wander around soaking up the atmosphere. No-one is allowed on the actual pitch (imagine the strip between the mound and the plate) though, as this has to be protected for the integrity of the match.
Fans visiting from around the world get so excited to be on the playing arena, as this is just not an option elsewhere (for example, fans in India are typically separated from the field by barbed wire fences and a moat). We’ve come to take it for granted.
I only mention this Jimmy because I see the same joy you’re expressing on the face of people playing games our cricket grounds every summer. We truly don’t know how lucky we are.
Thanks, but we were truly just happy to have our team still involved at that stage of the World Cup considering the wretched form we carried into it.
Its a strange thing to support NZ cricket – we have far less talent than other test playing nations, which is supported by the fact that we lose far more often than we win. But on occasion, and typically at World Cups, we perform far above our talent only to be heartbroken in the knockout stages. In other words, it is a lot like following the Indians.
With a father who always had to beat traffic and the closest stadium was in Kansas City. Needless to say my time on the dirt is limited.

I just meant that surely you could see the appeal to a kid. Or, in my case a few years ago, to a 31-year-old.
My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts.
I’m just explaining my veiled jealousy. Because of different reasons I’ve had the chance to spend a lot of time on the field for different sports venues so the appeal isn’t necessarily there for me. I’m also currently without kids so lack the sentimental feel it might bring.

ROOT showed waaaaaay too many shots of food early in the proceedings. It seems like they needed to pump up concession sales. Or shots of kids eating is always considered cute.
