Opening Day - By the Numbers/Trivia

As yesterday's game wound down, it dawned on me that I was getting tired of looking at the White Sox on Opening Day, especially Mark Buehrle. As it turns out, this is with good reason.

Since the franchise's first Opening Day in 1901, this is the 29th time the Tribe has opened versus the White Sox. Amazingly enough, this actually ties the team record for Opening Day's opponents. What team has the Tribe also faced 29 times? Additionally, Buehrle, has now thrown against the Tribe on five occasions on Opening Day, the most in history.

Although it seems we play the White Sox every year, we did open in Texas three seasons ago. But we have now opened versus the White Sox 6 of the past 7 years.

As bad as the loss was yesterday seemed, the Tribe still leads the White Sox on Opening Day 15-14. But in the past six meetings, we are now only 2-4.

Overall, the Tribe is now 57-54 on Opening Day, with 455 runs scored and 461 runs allowed. There have been 12 extra inning opening day games, with the Tribe 6-6 in those games. The worst Opening Day loss was in 1911 to the St Louis Browns (Baltimore Orioles), 12-3. So sans yesterday's comeback, that would have been our worst Opening Day loss ever. The biggest victory by the Tribe was the 1968 9-0 shutout versus the White Sox. The 15 runs allowed yesterday were the most allowed by the Tribe. The most ever scored by the Tribe were in the 21-14 victory in 1925 against those St Louis Browns again.

With the poor weather in the Cleveland area, it is not surprising at all that the Tribe has opened on the road 68 times while opening at home a mere 43 times. The Tribe is now 22-21 in home openers and 35-33 in road openers. The Tribe's longest win streak on Opening Day is five games, occurring on three separate occasions: 1925-1929, 1931-1935, and 1951-1955. the longest losing streak is only 4 games, but that has happened four times: 1969-1972, 1979-1982, 1990-1993, 2003-2006. With the loss yesterday, the Tribe is on a 3 game losing streak right now.

And now to other trivia.

Repeating from above, What team has the Tribe also faced 29 times, besides the White Sox? Tigers

What day of the week is most common for the Tribe to open? Tuesday-46. Least common? Sunday-2.

Which seven players have started for the Tribe on Opening Day 10 or more times? Name them and their positions. Note, two of them played two different positions. [For all positional data, I only used 1919 forward as I don't have boxscores from 1901-1918.] Lou Boudreau 11-SS, Joe Sewell 8-SS, 2-3B, Earl Averill 10-CF, 1-RF, Jim Hegan 11-C, Sandy Alomar 10-C, Omar Vizquel 11-SS, Keltner 11-3B.

One player has started at four different positions on opening day. Name him and the poitions. [He is not part of the 10+ above] Joe Carter - LF, CF, RF, DH

Which starting pitcher has also opened as position player? Bob Lemon

Which two starting pitchers have opned for and against the Tribe? Eckersley, Sutcliffe

Have to run a few errands, will check back after the game to answer the questions.

I’m going to guess the Tigers as the other 29-time opponent. They’re both among the 8 inaugural members of the AL.

by InfiniteMonkeyTypists on Apr 2, 2011 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

This is correct, the Tribe is 17-12 against the Tigers on Opening Day.

by talonk on Apr 2, 2011 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

And for opening for and against – how about Early Wynn?

by InfiniteMonkeyTypists on Apr 2, 2011 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

Strange, but no. Wynn opened twice for the Chisox, but never against the Tribe.

by emd2k3 on Apr 2, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Rick Sutcliffe?

Vs. Cleveland as an Oriole in 1992. (Baltimore won 2-0.)

by emd2k3 on Apr 2, 2011 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

Dennis Eckersley is most likely the other in 1979. (Boston won 7-1.)

by emd2k3 on Apr 2, 2011 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

you are correct with Sutcliffe and Eckersley.

Sutcliffe for: 1983 @OAK, 1984 @TEX, both wins. Sutcliffe against 1992 @BAL, a loss for the Tribe and another win for Sutcliffe.

Eckersley for: 1976 vs DET (L) and 1977 @BOS (W); against 1979 @BOS, a loss for the Tribe and a win for Eckersley.

What’s weird is that we’ve only opened against the Senators/Twins 3 times in history.

by emd2k3 on Apr 2, 2011 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Yep, the totals:

White Sox 29 (15-14), Tigers 29 (17-12), Orioles/Browns 19 (9-10), Rangers/Senators 12 (6-6), Athletics KC/OAK 5 (3-2), Yankees 5 (1-4), Angels 4 (2-2), Brewers 3 (1-2), Twins/Senators 3 (1-2), Mariners 2 (2-0), Royals 2 (1-1), Blue Jays 1 (0-1).

Is Bob Lemon the position player/starting pitcher?

by InfiniteMonkeyTypists on Apr 2, 2011 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, opening day SP in 1950, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1956 and he was the Opening Day CF in 1946.

by talonk on Apr 2, 2011 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

4+ positions – how about Julio Franco, SS, 2B, 1B and DH?

by InfiniteMonkeyTypists on Apr 3, 2011 8:30 AM EDT reply actions

Close, but he only had 3 positions on Opening Day, SS-5 times, 2B-2 times, and 1B-1 time. He never did open as the DH.

Joe Carter: LF, CF, RF, DH

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

And to be specific, 1985-DH, 1986-RF, 1987-LF, 1988/9-CF

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

10 Opening Days, I’m guessing Boudreau at SS.

by afh4 on Apr 3, 2011 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

Correct, Boudreau actually was the Opening Day SS from 1940 to 1950, 11 seasons.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

One down, six to go on the 10+ Opening Day starts.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

I’d guess Speaker almost certainly did it, although he predates your box scores in his early career, so I’m not sure you’ll count him. If you are counting him, I’d guess it’s all in CF.

by afh4 on Apr 3, 2011 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, Joe Sewell at SS.

by afh4 on Apr 3, 2011 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

And maybe Earl Averill. Those are my guesses right now.

by afh4 on Apr 3, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Earl Averill is also correct. 1929-1938 in CF and 1939 in RF for 11 Opening Days.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Sewell is correct. 10 Opening Days, 1921-1928 at SS and 1929-1930 at 3B.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Speaker probably did it, but I only have him at 8 from 1919-1926 since I don’t have the pre 1919 data. He was on the Tribe 1916-1918, so he probably has 11 Opening Day starts. But he is not one of the seven I mentioned above.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Also Nap Lajoie also probably did it. But again I don’t have that data, so he is not one of the seven.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Jim Hegan at Catcher from late 40s to late 50s?

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

And another catcher, if I’m counting the years right, would be Sandy Alomar,Jr.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

And I’m sure that Omar Vizquel guy we saw today is on that list.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

At shortstop. Duh.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Omar is correct as well. 11 straight Opening Days at SS from 1994-2004.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I would think Alomar would be hurt too often.

by afh4 on Apr 3, 2011 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m remembering only one instance where he didn’t start the season and that was 95 when we had Tony Pena. Actually I’m remebering Pena starting and can’t think of anyone else in that whole span besides Sandy.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

And possibly Brook Jacoby at 3rd base/1st base?

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Close, but Jacoby only got 9 Opening Day starts. 1984-1990 at 3B, 1991 at 1B and 1992 back at 3B.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Sandy Alomar at C is correct. He got 10 Opening Days at C, from 1990-1994 and 1996-2000. Tony Pena did start at C in 1995.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Jim Hegan is correct. 11 Opening Days at C from 1947-1957.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

So with the correct guesses of Averill, Hegan, Vizquel, J Sewell, and S Alomar, we now have six of the seven players who have started Opening Day 10 or more times.

Only one left. Also, noblody has put a guess on the days of the week question.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 8:00 PM EDT reply actions

How about Feller? Does he count?

by afh4 on Apr 3, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Feller counts of course, but he only got 7 Opening Day starts from 1939-1941 and 1946-1949. Had he not served in World War II, I bet he would have made it.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ken Keltner @ 3B with (I think) 11 opening day starts.

I had to dig a little for that one.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 3, 2011 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Keltner is correct. He did have 11 Opening Day starts at 3B, but he is the only one who had 11 starts that were not consecutive, 1938-1944 and 1946-1949.

by talonk on Apr 3, 2011 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I know you want someone to guess on days of the week. I don’t know anything about that, though I’m sure there’s some historical reason that some day (or a couple of days) would be more popular.

I’ll say Friday. Makes some sense, and it was OD this year.

by afh4 on Apr 4, 2011 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

Wow, that page would have been a whole lot easier than going year by year that I did. Excellent find emd!

And Tuesday is correct for most.

Tue-46, Mon-20, Wed-19, Thu-10, Sat-8, Fri-6, Sun-2.

by talonk on Apr 4, 2011 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Hah, I did the same tedious year-by-year for finding Keltner and confirming Hegan. Stupid thing is that I actually had the Indian’s BRef “frachise history” page open and never saw that link. Groovy.

I'm emotional about my glove...

by JimmyAB on Apr 4, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I stumbled on via a Google search.

by emd2k3 on Apr 4, 2011 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

A few other tidbits.

Most stable position – SS, only 33 players. Least stable position – RF, 57 players.

Current active leader, Hafner – 9 straight seasons, 1-1B, 8-DH.

Other players with 9 Opening Day Starts: Larry Doby, Brook Jacoby, Kenny Lofton.

Players with 8 Opening Day starts: Julio Franco, Charlie Jamieson, Tris Speaker (see note above), Andre Thornton, Hal Trosky.

And that should conclude the Opening Day post. If anyone else has any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
