Game 25: Indians 9, Tigers 5
Carlos Santana walked up to the plate in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out. The game was tied. There were just 15,000 in attendance at Progressive Field, but as the game wore on, the crowd sounded more like a sell-out throng than the usual drowsy gathering. Santana had diffused a rally in the first inning by hitting into a double play, but when he came up in the ninth, that seemed like the ancient past.
------
The matchup on paper favored the Tigers. Jeanmar Gomez, thrust into the rotation because of Mitch Talbot's elbow injury, had been much less effective than last season. His fastball was a couple mph slower, and his sinkers weren't sinking. Max Scherzer, Detroit's starter, had struck out 30 in 31 innings, and had thrown eight shutout innings in his previous start. And for the most part, paper matched the game. Gomez in the first threw a nothing fastball to Miguel Cabrera, who hammered it out of the park. It looked for the first couple innings that Detroit would blow the Indians out. And they really should have; Detroit was one hit away from a rout several times.
1. Second inning, 2-0 Detroit. Rhymes strikes out with the bases loaded.
2. Fourth inning, 3-0 Detroit. Rhymes flies out with runners on first and third.
3. Sixth inning, 3-0 Detroit. Ordonez strikes out with the bases loaded.
If the Tigers get a hit in any of those situations, the game's over. But they didn't, and the Indians made them pay.
Max Scherzer started to run out of gas in the sixth inning. He's not really an innings eater at this point in his career even though his stuff is good enough to take him deep into games. After retiring the first two in the inning, Asdrubal Cabrera lined a solid single to center field, just the third hit of the game for the Indians. Choo then worked a walk, as did Carlos Santana, bringing up Shelley Duncan. Duncan was in the lineup against a right-handed starter because Travis Hafner was still nursing a sore ankle, but he came through, lining a single into left field, scoring two. Despite collecting just four hits to that point, the Indians were just one run down.
Chad Durbin, who had managed to retire Ordonez to end the sixth, came back out for the seventh. Bad idea. He gave up singles to the first two hitters of the inning, and Manny Acta had to pull him. This was in my estimation the last time in quite a while that Durbin will be used in an important game situation, and with May almost here, he can't afford many more bad outings. Joe Smith couldn't keep the score where it was, giving up a run-scoring single to LGFT Jhonny Peralta. Alex Avila drove another run home with a sacrifice fly. The Indians were now back where they started from: down three runs.
Scherzer came back for the seventh, which caught me by surprise. The Tigers have a deep bullpen, and with the added runs, this seemed a good time to pull their starter. After getting Brantley, Scherzer left one up to Matt LaPorta: 5-3. After he walked Sizemore with two outs, looking rather bad while doing it, I was sure that this would be it. But even though Leyland walked out to the mound, he left his starter in. Asdrubal Cabrera took advantage, jacking a high fastball over the right-field wall to tie the game. The Tigers had been the better team all game, but just couldn't put the contest away. Now, with just a handful of hits, the Indians had jumped back into the game yet again.
Each game has it's own separate personality, but this one also seemed to feed off past victories. All those easy blowouts, impressive pitching performances had a hand in the comeback. Because of those wins, an AL-best 16 wins, the players and fans seemed to expect yet another win, especially after Asdrubal's homer.
------
The count was 3-1. Joaquin Benoit had gotten Shin-Soo Choo to swing through high fastballs, but Santana had laid off them. Now, with nowhere to put Santana, Benoit had to throw a strike. Carlos was waiting for a fastball in the strike zone. Benoit delivered one, and Santana hit one of the most majestic home runs you'll ever see deep into the right field seats.
If you have a DVR and MLB Network, tape Quick Pitch tonight or tomorrow morning. Watch the first five or so minutes of the show; after the usual highlights of the Tigers-Indians game, they'll switch over to their dugout camera. The shot starts in the Tribe dugout, capturing the initial reaction to the grand slam, then it follows the payers out onto the field as they greet Adam Everett, Grady Sizemore, Asdrubal Cabrera, and finally Santana.

I’ve rewatched the slam several times and noticed the bat boy, right before the 3-1 pitch, mouth, “He’s not gonna walk.” I don’t think me pointing that out matters at all, but every second leading up to that bomb was awesome (speaking nothing of the awesomeness that immediately followed), so there’s another angle.

Hammy during Grady’s at bat:
“Boy the way this season has gone to this point. The way the Indians have played to this point. It just feels like it’s going to be a walk-off win.”
I’m sure it’s been said before, but the MLB.tv feature to allow Hammy to be overlaid over the video is just an unbelievable feature. Was huge tonight.

Wahoo Baseball, baby!
No, unfortunately. Came from Chuck Crow’s gallery at CleCom. The AP photographer, Amy, pulled a massive FAIL on this. She took absolutely nothing of the celebration. At least not that was uploaded yet.
If there was an AP photo, or if one shows up, I could/will get the High Res and post it for everyone.
I know we like to hate on Duncan’s Yankee past and that he is a monster, but the monster loves to play baseball. Also, who is the Doogie Howser-looking kid next to Kearns?
Shelley is awesome.
Also:

- Choo looks overjoyed. This team is what he’s been waiting for.

I’m sure a lot of us watching/listening at home did the same. I know I did.
You can see Victor standing the the DET dugout as Benoit is walking in. I wonder if that felt a little strange to watch Santana, wearing his old #, the main (non-monetary) reason he was deemed expendable, beat them.
Yeah, that had to be a big bummer for him to watch. Someone else wearing his jersey, the big stud on his team, celebrating with at least a few of his teammates.
Kind of sad. Can he be our acquisition for the playoff run (but then give him back to the Tigers afterward so they can pay the rest of his contract)?

My wife and I went to a Royal Wedding party last night thrown by a bunch of Brits that I used to work with. The DVR was set as usual to record the tribe game, but I figured that Gomez would be over matched by Scherzer and I would just zip through the game when I got home. I mean they aren’t going to win every game are they?
We got home about 10:30 and things seemed to be going according to my imagined script as Ryan noted in the recap. When Droobs tied it I started to go a little slower. By the bottom of the ninth I started watching in real time. The thing about watching a pre-recorded game is there is a green bar that stops when DirecTV cuts to black after the game ends. The green bar wasn’t long enough for the game to go past the bottom of the ninth, so I knew something good was going to happen. Even with the eerie ability to foresee the future, I was as excited by the ending of this game as I have been in a long long time.

Three pieces of advice:
1 When your fiance’ and Mother in law to be give you a wedding-related task, screw it up beyond belief so they won’t ask again.
2 If you and your fiance’ hold a lukewarm opinion about the wedding that runs contrary to the Mother in law to be, don’t fold. Make a big deal about capitulating so that you can win a battle that you really care about later.
3 Your fiance’ might be bat$hit crazy for the last 30 days with stress from being pulled in so many different directions. Roll with it.

Tribejay – always look forward to your analysis. Are you a former pitcher, or scout?
by kennesawmountainwahoo on Apr 30, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Ha! While I did pitch during my teen years, it was not at any significant level. And I am definitely not a scout. However, I have probably watched at least a portion of most every Tribe game since 1999, and I like to think I’ve picked up on a thing or two in that time, and know what it takes to have success at the MLB level. I think sometimes I’m right on the money, other times I probably don’t know what I’m talking about. But I enjoy analyzing the game and trying to predict who is going to be good, etc.
I find it funny that my reputation on here is that of a scout-type. My background as a fan is more sabermetric, as I remember having my views of the game being completely changed by the 1984 Bill James Baseball Abstract.
Well, either way, I enjoy your take. I have that book on my bookshelf.

I was at my son’s little league game here on the west coast, surreptitiously glancing at the Indians on my phone’s gamecast throughout. Stepped away in the bottom of the Indians 9th I was so pumped up. After the home run It was all I could do not to tell my son, who was still pitching, about the game. After the little league game ended, my son’s team losing 13-9, I told him about the walk-off and we high fived. Lots of weird looks from the other parents and kids on the team.
Whereabouts on the west coast? My company is HQ in Oakland, and I usually try to schedule trips out there around Indians games. Unsuccessful for the trip coming up.
by kennesawmountainwahoo on Apr 30, 2011 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Bats are hot right now, but be prepared for them to slow down on the road. Just looked at the schedule – they face Cahill, Anderson, and Weaver in succession…and end the road trip with Haren. They’ll just have to gut out the wins next week.
So I was at the game last night, first game of the six pack deal I got of bleacher tickets. They had a middle school band sitting a row behind us with all of their instruments. They were all tigers fans (assuming from Detroit area) as noted by there “Go Tigers” chants and general pro Tigers verbal propaganda. They organized and played during the seventh inning stretch, and then also sometime in between the eighth inning. Poor kids got booed like crazy, it was beautiful. They then pandered a bit to the pseudo Ohio State alums and played ’hang on sloopy or whatever that song is, and gained some cheers.
Santana’s hit, as everyone already knows, was epic. Being there was great, earlier in the game it didn’t feel right though. The sky was clear and tranquil but the coldness kept you tight. After the team had tied the game and the remnants of the Christmas Ale that I drank to start the game off, began to full circulate within my circulatory system, bringing forth a shielding warmth to the cold environment. With very little wind to compete with, the fans that were there seemed to collectively expound enthusiasm that we’d win this game, and as the pressure mounted on Benoit in the ninth with the bases loaded, it came to a head, only further poked and cajoled by the strike out of Choo, and finally the wrath of Santana.
Me too.
