Chris Perez' velocity?
Anyone else a little concerned about his lack of velocity so far? His fastball has averaged 91 MPH so far, down 3 miles from the past two years. Is there any reason for it? It's not a big sample size, but he had his velocity from the get go last season.
Here's his velocity charts... you can see he's never thrown as "slow" as he has so far this year... http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=5213&position=P&pitch=FA

Base on where everyone ended last year, velocity wise, I’d say the Cleveland gun is two clicks off to start the year.
I couldn’t see all the games, but from what I saw:
- Tomlin’s fastball averaged 87, and didn’t top 90. Last year he sat 89-91 and actually hit 94 in his one relief appearance.
- Hermann was 93-95 last year during an inning of work. In his one inning the other day he was 91-93.
- Both Sipp and Perez are similarly off – Sipp has yet to exceed 91 on the gun which he regularly did last year.
- Fausto would hit 93-94 several times a game last year. So far this year it is a tick lower.
- CPerez was 93-95 last year on his fastball, his appearances this year are 90-92.
different gun this weekend, so keep an eye out.
Yeah, check out Matt Thornton’s blip for his one appearance at the Jake: http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=1918&position=P&pitch=FA

Speaking of velocity, Pomeranz strikes out 2 in his first pro inning, sitting 94-95 on his fastball.

Gardner is getting all of his outs via the grounder tonight, but struggling with control and not striking anyone out in Akron

I was going to ask, “Why aren’t we talking more about this?” But then I guess there’s only so many times we can say “Sounds like he was really good last night.”
But it sounds like Pomeranz was really good last night.

I listened to the game thru the first four innings. Drew was strictly fastball for the first two innings, sitting at 94 and touching 96. He threw one changeup at 79 for a strikeout, and that was it.
In the third inning he tried to mix in his curveball, but couldn’t locate it very well. He went back to a strict fastball diet, and I think that’s all he threw during the game, pretty much.
So – he did all that with one pitch. Some scouts say his curve is his best pitch, and he has yet to really break it out. I think his promotion to Akron may be somewhat tied to Knapp’s debut – they are holding a healthy Knapp back just to limit his innings – they probably have a specific time they want him to go into the rotation. Drew up to Akron, Knapp takes his spot at Kinston next month is a reasonable scenario.
Just saw this. I’m cleaning the drool from my shirt.

Bard was 2-3 mph slower, too. (Based on the Prog gun)
