Manny Ramirez retires
This is abrupt and surprising, to say the least. Do we think it was to avoid more steroid allegations?
Does TBR want Jordan Brown now?

The tweets I’ve been seeing seem to indicate a potential ‘roid issue (Buster: "Manny had been notified pending issue with drug/treatment program.Take this for what it’s worth:Manny looked much bigger in spring training."; MLB Trade Rumors: “Source: Manny tested positive for banned substance, would have been facing 100-game suspension had he not retired (or succeeded in appeal”)

banned substance could be marijuana, right?…or does MLB regulate that under a different set of rules? Trying to remember…

My father says he quit so he could smoke pot, a la Ricky Williams. He’s a millionaire, doesn’t need to play, so more power to him. My only complaint is this makes the Rays weaker and less of a threat to keep the Yanks out of the playoffs
If it is, Manny should come out and say it. Make it a teachable moment Manny!

I like to call this Manny invoking the “You’re Fired/No, I Quit!” defense.
God bless that loon.
You are reading my signature.
I’d think the HoF is out of the question for him at this point.

After two major drug infractions?
I’ll remind you that Jeff Bagwell has none.

Yes, after two major drug infractions. After a few years of Manny on the ballot—this is almost ten years from now—I’m willing to bet the stance on PED users will have considerably softened or, at the least, be something not worth anyone’s outrage anymore. Not to mention there will be some new writers voting that don’t belong to this old school of hardliners.
Manny Ramirez is damn good at hitting baseballs, one of the best right-handers in the game during his prime. He was better than Bagwell. And the two positive tests came at the end of his career. People will gloss over it.

I’ll add: I’d vote for him on the first ballot. I’m sure enough people will “send a message” (and I’m sure Manny will just sit at home and sob into his hands, message well-received) and only vote for him after a little time has passed, but you either Are or you Aren’t.
Steel Nick
I wouldn’t count Manny over Bagwell as a slam dunk. I think Manny was a better hitter overall, but Bagwell played most of his career in the Astrodome, actaully was a decent fielder (he did win a Gold Glove) while Manny was a hitter pure and simple. A glorified DH if you will.
Manny has better counting stats, but playing 8 years in the bandbox of Fenway and in Jacons when it was a hitters park, will help you more than the 8 years Bagwell had in the Astrodome.
Career OPS+ for Manny 155, Bagwell 149.
Julio has got it right. The PED blackball is overwhelming at this point. I think it will take more than ten years to reverse it.
I also think if he goes in, it’s in a Boston cap, so screw him anyway.

It will be interesting to see what the general attitude is towards these guys in the coming years when they start to pop up on ballots.
Oh, I’m sorry, by “interesting” I mean “a worse death than slitting my throat.”

Mac and Baggie haven’t come within sniffing distance of enshrinement.

Who gets to choose which cap it is? Manny seems to have a lot more love for Cleveland than Boston, so if it’s up to him I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in an Indians cap.
On a related note, do you think Thome will be in with an Indians cap?

If he does make it, which I doubt, it will be as a Red Sox. Same number of years there and in Cleveland. Slightly better numbers in Boston, plus 2 World Series wins with Boston.
Yes. The main test for the HOF is historical significance. Manny’s place on the 1990s Indians clubs was plenty enough significant historically for most HOF caps, but in Manny’s specific case, the Indians lose that argument to the Red Sox clubs of the following decade — even without looking at his numbers.
Odd to think, that from those late 90s teams, we were going to have anywhere from 3-6 possible Hall of Famers.
Belle – shutout do to the writers hatered of him
Lofton – played a long time, but not long enough to get the career numbers to enshrine him
Ramirez – steroids caught up with him
Vizquel – Might still make it
Thome – I think he has a good shot at it
S. Alomar – injuries dereailed his chances.

In his professional career, Alomar was never on a HOF trajectory (unless you mean Robbie)

Am I the only who thinks he should be a first ballot Hall of Famer?
by Gradyforpresident on Apr 8, 2011 5:13 PM EDT reply actions
really depends on how long he was on the juice I guess.
But the writers will most likely ostracize him, so while you may believe he is, he won’t get it. He’ll be lucky to get 40% of the vote I think.
This is a guy with a .996 career OPS. Steroids do not make that.
And the latter is just more evidence of how broken baseball writers are.

He screwed himself royally.
So much talent, but so many bad decisions.

You mean having an award-winning GM doesn’t guarantee the ability to compete with NY, Boston and LA every year?

Can we start predicting bullpen implosions and drafts where absolutely NONE of their picks pan out yet?
I think Jonah Keri contributed to this bad luck by relentlessly plugging his book.

Um, I bet they’d take Kearns.

(Preferably when Grady returns)
Although he did sign with us for a particularly good reason. It’d be kind of a **** move to ship him to Florida.

Is it worth giving up anything for Kearns when you’re just trying to delay the clock of Desmond Jennings? We got Hannahan for nothin’.
Steel Nick
I’d consider Matt Moore for Kearns.

It’s the stinkin’ taint of Boston. Was it worth it, Manny? Really, Manny, was it worth it?
