Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

During a question-and-answer, he said the Indians have their eye on two former players to come back and coach -- once they're out of uniform. The two: Omar Vizquel and Jim Thome.

From an article about a speech given by Bob DiBiasio that Vince Grzegorek linked to. Also a funny bit in here about Charlie Sheen trying to throw out the first pitch on opening day.

He’s already hit zero in 17 games!

Um, I think that’s BA / SLG / OPS.

by Matt in LA on May 20, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s almost bad enough to play for the Twins.

So you don’t think he play in front of this guy .280/ .360/ .659?

I’m gonna need a translation on this.

I like BP/Slugging/OPS. You can always calculate OBP from OPS – Slugging. I wanna know the guys BA directly. To me a guy with a OBP .350 and a BA .250 is less valuable than a guy with a OBP of .350 and a BA of .300.

I’m gonna have to say you’re wrong. There has to be reason, other than a good eye, that a .250 hitter can post a OBP 100 points higher than his BA. Without digging through stats to support my theory, wouldn’t there be another reason, such as the player being pitched around? Seems to me that those players are generally hitting for a lot of power. Maybe you already think the same thing but put less value in the power bat than the singles hitter, but you’d have to answer that.

So you think a 10% walk rate is all that unusual? Eddie Yost – the Walking Man – had a walk rate of >18%. Meanwhile Ozzie Guillen- that’s Ozzie Guillen the player – had a walk rate of 3.5%. Walk rate is one of the most variable in all of baseball.

No, I don’t think it is unusual at all. I think all the factors that go into a higher OBP lead to a more valuable hitter (plate discipline, pitcher’s desire to pitch around, etc.).

So how do you explain a guy like Ichiro’s walk rate?

by mauichuck on May 21, 2011 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Ichiro is a slap hitter with speed and no power and an absolutely ordinary walk rate, roughly 40-50 points above BA every year. But he is also an extremely above average contact hitter. You’re talking about the best of the best. He gets away with being more valuable because of his speed, his slap single can sometimes become a double, but not very many have that kind of speed. So sure, there are times when the higher BA with the same OBP can be more valuable, but you have to be in the top echelons of contact and speed.

he actually has decent pull power, but rarely displays it.

That’s only because he chooses not to. If he wanted to, he could hit 30 homers a year. #orsowevebeentoldoverandoveragain

I’ll bet he can’t eat 50 eggs. Nobody can eat 50 eggs.
