Alex White out 8-12 weeks
No surgery, and the doc says it's not really similar to Adam Miller's injury.
It seems doubtful the Indians would throw a rehabbing rookie into an August pennant race, so I'd say we've seen our last Alex White start in Cleveland until September. For those keeping track, the club got 15 IP in exchange for about 100 days of service time. Contention is expensive.

Service time is overrated. In this case the Tribe got burned because of the injury. Still the right call to bring him up. He was the best pitching option at the time.

I didn’t (and wouldn’t) say it was the wrong call. I was just pointing out that this is a not-shocking end result, one which ought to factor into everyone’s cost-benefit analysis of when a guy gets called up.
And the needs of the major league team weighs heavier in the analysis when the team is a playoff contender, as you also imply.
At least he probably won’t burn that option?

No, I think he will. But burning the option will spare the service time … just enough. On the one hand, why worry about it anymore? On the other hand, the reason to worry is precisely that he may not ever need to be in the minors again after this August. Getting back to my original point:

Lonnie Soloff was quoted as saying the only similarity is that both injuries were to the middle finger of the pitching hand.

All those 2012 and 2013 sellouts will cover the arb cost.

He’ll be back in time to go to the pen for the playoffs.

Sometimes I get blisters on my middle finger from bowling. Sometime I sprain my middle finger playing basketball. BFD. If this was 1940, Alex would suck it up and pitch.

oh really? you regularly do damage to the ligament that connects to your bone? On a finger that bears the brunt of extreme torque? I can’t even tell if you’re being sarcastic.

The Turk of 2-3 years ago was different in a lot of ways. That he was more thoughtful then is not one of them.

Really? The “If this was 1940…” should give it away.

If it were 1940, Alex would be in a new line of work by 1942.

Can I lend him my middle finger? He can give it back after we win the World Series.

I’d make the same offer, but I need mine just in case I cross paths with Keith Law.

I agree with some others above. Probably the best-case scenario for 2011 is a return to the big-league club in the bullpen. Also, Zach McAllister might be a factor in the second half of this year. I don’t trust Carrasco and Talbot to BOTH be good AND healthy the rest of the year.
Also, I don’t know if he or the medical staff will want him to start throwing sliders when he comes back. In the pen, he can go back to two pitches.
Which begs the question – throwing and developing the slider obviously puts different torque on his fingers – they have to be thinking it was no accident it happened throwing that pitch.
It’s May 22 and we are in first place with the best record in baseball, would it really be that strange if David Huff somehow became a viable major league starter this year?

What if… David Huff morphed into a viable major league starter.
What if… Jeremy Sowers… Nah.

McAllister is looking like the pitcher I thought Kluber was.
