Game 45: Indians 3, Red Sox 2
The Indians flouted the odds, scoring two runs off Daniel Bard with two outs, and retiring Carl Crawford on a game-ending double play. You can't rely on types of things to go right, but it was because of Justin Masterson's fantastic pitched that the Indians were even in a position to beat the odds.
The Indians will face Boston's top three starters this series, and started by matching up against Clay Buchholz. The tall right-hander took more time to throw the baseball than Rafael Betancourt, which could have been his way of keeping hitters off-balance. It was more likely his mid-90s four-seam fastball that gave Tribe hitters fits. A lot of pitchers have been throwing the Indians less fastballs, but Buchholz almost exclusively threw either the four-seam fastball or the two-seam cutter.
Asdrubal Cabrera got the Indians on the board when he slammed his third homer in two days in the fourth inning. Cabrera has been on fire over the last two weeks, perfect timing for a lineup that's missing both Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner. And, as we'll see later in the game, he's not just pulling the ball as a left-handed hitter.
Boston took a 2-1 lead when Carl Crawford took Masterson deep in the fifth inning. The Indians might have tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but Jack Hannahan was called out after he overslid second base in a steal attempt. Austin Kearns, who was at the plate at the time, then doubled, which would have score Hannahan easily from second, and probably even from first. But recently those types of missed opportunities don't come back to haunt this team.
In the bottom of the sixth, a fairly heavy rain began which last through the rest of the game. At one point, the tarp began to be rolled out, only to be stopped by the crew chief. At that time, Boston led 2-1 and the game was official, so if that tarp had been allowed to be placed on the field, there's a chance the Indians lose in a rain-shortened game.
Another caught stealing was equally important. After Jacoby Ellsbury reached first base on a questionable call by the first base umpire (leading to a rare Manny Acta ejection), the Boston center fielder attempted to steal second but was gunned down by Lou Marson. If Ellsbury reaches second safely, he would have scored later in the inning on Adrian Gonzalez's single.
Jack Hannahan led off the eighth with a single. Adam Everett pinch-ran for him, and went to second on a groundout. That was it for Buchholz; Terry Francona brought in Daniel Bard, one of the better setup men in the league. He struck out pinch-hitter Carlos Santana on high fastballs, but that didn't work with Michael Brantley, who made Bard come down in the strike zone. He took a couple borderline pitches for balls, then jumped on a fastball down in the zone, hitting it between first and second to plate the tying run. Then up came Asdrubal, who hit a fastball down and way over Carl Crawford's head to score Brantley.
Chris Perez lived on the edge yet again in his save attempt. He gave up (thanks to Choo's reputation) a single to J.D. Drew with one out. Drew went to third on a similar single by Jed Lowrie. Carl Crawford was now up, and the Indians configured their middle infielders at double play depth on the remote chance that Crawford hit a hard ground ball at an infielder. Crawford did just that, and the Indians doubled him up to end the game.

| Highest WPA | Lowest WPA | ||
| Asdrubal | .428 | Marson | -.141 |
| Brantley | .253 | Santana | -.097 |

The situation was that Guillen didn’t want his reliever Thornton to face one of our righties, so he decided to take his chances with a tiring Peavy vs. Asdrubal. It didn’t work out well for Guillen.

I just got home from the game. Just before Crawford hit into the DP I assured everyone around me that he is too fast to double up. I honestly think it took both the sharply hit ground ball right at OC and the waterlogged dirt on the first base line that Crawford had to navigate to make it happen.
Escellent game … and on national TV no less. Too bad we’ll get the top story, not because we won, or how we won even, but only because is is the DoucheHose we are playing right now.

I wouldn’t be so sure that someone isn’t logging “holds” by outfielders.
I'm emotional about my glove...
Wouldn’t that be a tad subjective? I’m guessing left fielders would lead the league in “holds” by a lot.
There’s a stat out there—and I don’t know who keeps it, because I’m lazy—that basically tracks how many bases baserunners advance on average in a given situation versus how many they advance when a specific player is in the outfield (similar in concept to those run expectancy matrix thingies used to evaluate how valuable relief pitchers have been). Obviously, this isn’t a perfect measure, because not all hits fall in equally (i.e. it’s much harder to keep a runner from advancing on a double into the RF corner than into the gap between CF and RF), but it’s not as subjective as leaving it up to the official scorekeeper or whatever.

This paper is about comparing US to Europe in terms of land use and transportation patterns… in a five-page (max) op-ed/essay. It’s tough, because how the hell can you not generalize about two huge and diverse land areas in a five-page paper?

by Turkmenbashi on May 24, 2011 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Beats me. I haven’t had to think about Europe in years, and believe me, I haven’t!
Europe and the USA are pretty heterogeneous (the USA even moreso, I would probably argue, but only in terms of land use transportation).
Maybe there are cases where you have many residents on the periphery, as in American cities, but comparatively few jobs outside of the center? Paris? The European cities I’m familiar with have their Edge Cities, but they’re nodal places; I can’t really picture the limitless beige monotony and sprawl of, say, Phoenix.
Do the Europeans keep good transportation statistics? Do they have their NAICS codes? Where can one get GIS shapefiles and such?
Check out Brookings – I think they’ve done a piece or two (podcast available of the panel discussion maybe?) on comparing US v. Europe. And go beyond CUSE, look at the Metro section as well. You can, of course, mention the rail system in Western Europe and the low cost Airlines which have created a very different transportation system than the Interstate Highway system in the US. I’d go into the fact that a lack of emphasis on the car in the intercities (and consequential reliance on public transit) has further supported the rail links. Of course this is always changing, I heard a story on NPR within the last two weeks on one man’s fight to prevent a parking lot from being built in Rome. Something to do with unique ruins vs. the fact that there’s NO parking in central Rome. Guess who’s going to win that argument (as long as Burlusconi is in power).
I’d love to read whatever you write – it’s an interesting topic.
I just want to believe.

Europe is way more dense and Americans drive way more cars
by Gradyforpresident on May 24, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, this is, in part, the myth/stereotype/elitism I’m trying to at least partially dispel. Yes, that’s true, to some extent, but let’s not pretend Europeans don’t love them some cars too. It’s just more expensive to drive there too.
My watch is broken... it's stuck on Tribe Time
#suckitLaw
by Turkmenbashi on May 24, 2011 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m not sure how that’s an elitist statement. They’re both factual
by Gradyforpresident on May 24, 2011 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, but a lot of times these sorts of statements are made by people who only visit urban cores in Europe and, therefore, don’t see/understand that many (most?) Europeans live and work in suburbs just like Americans. Furthermore, these statements are often made by people living in US suburbs who visit Europe. They don’t get that they’ve made a choice to live where public transit is inefficient or not viable when they could be living in a more transit-friendly urban core.
So there are a lot of “self-selection” biases, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t real differences, too. Europe, in general, is denser and thus can more easily support transit. Concurrent to the land use characteristics, there are economic factors like high gas prices/taxes, congestion charges, etc. that make driving relatively more expensive than in the US. Parking in Europe is more expensive and more scarce. All these things lead to a system where transit can more easily thrive and more people are inclined to ride it.
In conclusion, I’d say it’s about 70% “real” factors and 30% selection bias. I see two major themes that emerge:
1. You can’t generalize. Each land mass has cities that run the gamut from dense to sparse, concentrated to sprawling. Transit ridership is very high in some US cities, very low in some Euro cities. In short, the “US vs. Europe” comparison is trite and meaningless as a generalization.
2. There are real deficiencies in terms of American transit which I believe can be partially solved through concurrent land use/pricing schemes. However despite these deficiencies, many Americans live blissfully unaware of the transit options offered to them and are far to quick to cite Europe’s superiority without examining the costs of their own behavior.

Great to be able to watch it on the big screen for a change and not knowing the score!
One day I'll get over to watch the Tribe play

yeah .. still a few errors up there
because of Justin Masterson’s fantastic pitched that
needs game after pitched.
Jack Hannahan led off the eighth with a single, and went to second on a groundout.
Everett pinch ran for him.

Did they ever officially put the game on ESPN2 because I kept checking and all they had on their was Sports Center???
Beautiful game. Manny Acta… Wahw! Getting tossed in the 8th seemed to fire up the damp crowd. I started to hear the “Red Sox Suck” chant louder after that point, and the mood in the stadium began to get nasty for Boston. It’s like the crowd didn’t care what pitchers were in the bullpen; the Indians were going to win.

I usually watch a bit of Cleveland’s Channel 8 news in the morning while getting dressed, but when I turned on the bedroom tv this morning it was still on STO, and Brantley was up with a 1-0 count in the 8th inning on the STO Breakfast Replay.
I sat down and watched it with the same enjoyment as last night in real time.

LaPorta looked bad last night at the plate. He needs to have a big game or two in the upcoming weeks.
Buchholz may have had something to do with it. We need to get out of the panic mode when some of our guys scuffle and look bad against really good pitchers. Great pitchers often make even the elite hitters look awful.

I think it’s pretty easy to get caught thinking this way when you only watch your preferred team upwards of 100 times in a season. Especially if that team is the only team you watch even remotely that often. But you’re absolutely right, I’ll catch myself thinking that after someone goes 1-10 over a three game stretch. I’d say “It’s a long season,” but I don’t want to sound like the Seattle manager. As fans, we just need to bow our necks and keep grinding.

A lot of guys looked really bad at the plate last night.

In other news….
John Adams drum was confiscated for suspicion of playing a part in Dustin Pedroia’s injury. Said one league official. “That’s Dustin Pedroia. He is the MVP. He plays for the Red Sox. He wouldn’t just fall. We are taking this investigation seriously.” Some believe that John Adams was corking his drum sticks and has been doing it for years.
Fan comments were hard to come by as many ESPN analysts were confused with which state Cleveland was in. A Ranger fan from Cleveland, Texas responded with “Why were the Red Sox playing against a minor league team last night?”
John Adam’s drum is only one of the theories sorrounding Pedroia’s injury. After thoroughly examining game thread’s at letsgotribe.com, officials seriously believe that many fans do in fact have time machines and may have used these to affect the game. “Time machines are highly theoretical and we are not sure how they could have influenced the game, but how else can you explain Boston losing?” Said another league official.
Boston plans to replace Dustin Pedroia with the garden gnome from Travelocity in tonight’s game.

Every time I think that we’ll be punished in a way that no team has before (ex: Choo DUI) I eventually realize that I only think this because I’m used to it from Goodell. In this one very specific instance: HIRE SELIG.

Dear Matt Underwood,
When you yell “Abra Cabrera!”, it makes the moment worse, not better.
Why no Hammy call on Indians.com? Anyone know where to find it from last night? I’d love to hear the AsCab double and game-ending double play.

Awesome, thanks. Wow, can’t believe anyone thought it was a good idea to lay music under the calls. No reason for that.
+1. I have a total soft spot for the guy even though I realize he is objectively bad. He may be a crappy PBP guy, but he’s our crappy PBP guy.
It’s not even that. Underwood is bad, and I hate him. There’s just something about Rosey that I like despite the fact that I can see why he drives people up the wall.
Trombone/creamy/soda.
“really, really sucks” was a bit aggressive. Mainly because he isn’t exciting enough to register that level of vitriol from anyone. I just know that I switch from the WTAM overlay feed back to Underwood and Manning when it’s his turn to call an inning. I just think he’s really boring and I don’t understand his presence in the booth.
My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts.
Most are. But just imagine if we had a quality TV team. I’d take Corrigan back in a heartbeat. Anything is better than the status quo. Trying too hard understates it by orders of magnitude.
I’ll put myself up for consideration. I’ve got a good broadcast voice and I’m young and like baseball and the Indians a lot.

George Costanza: What about being a sports commentator? You know how I always make those witty comments during a game?
Jerry: You do make good comments.
George Costanza: So?
Jerry: Well, they generally give those jobs to ex-ballplayers and people, you know, in broadcasting.
George Costanza: [pause] Well that’s really not fair.
Jerry: I know.

reminds me of a baseball game I went to in Anaheim with my mom.
She likes to listen to the AM announcers while at the game.
Halfway through the game, she leaned over to me and said “Do you know almost everything you have commented on, the guys on the radio have repeated right after you?”
I knew I picked the wrong profession.
My ex-GF used to call those announcer-kills

Someone from Wisconsin that I follow on twitter just wondered how often is a team (Twins) more games out of 1st place (15.5) than they actually have wins (15) this late in the season.
I love this.

I’ve been working on our summer cabin in West Virgina for two weeks. My wife had to stay behind in DC, tied to her job. We talk by phone every night before bed and one of the things I always mention is that the Indians won again and usually leave it at that. But last night I was pumped. It was such an improbable win and I found myself babbling, trying hard to explain what made this win so special – and I couldn’t. It was so many little things: the hot bat of Asdrubal, the tarp that didn’t get laid down in the 6th that would have ended the game with the Red Sox leading, the spot-on throw by Marson to prevent a critical stolen base, the single by Hannahan to start the 8th, and who was replaced by a faster pinch runner who then scored the tying run on a close play at the plate, a run that was the result of the gritty at bat by Brantley which led to back to back doubles, the second of which gave us the lead, and then that improbable double play that suddenly ended the game with runners at the corners and just one out, improbable because the batter was Carl (“fastest player in baseball”) Crawford. But I guess she understood my excitement, because the last thing she said before goodbye was, “Lets go to the playoffs!” Oh boy!

Here’s the recap from ESPN – Boston.
I only point this out to highlight the awesome response commenter Andynel88 posts:
Paraphrasing the article- "If not by sheer luck the Indians would not have won this game. The gods of fate conspired against the Red Sox to have Michael Brantley have an amazing AB to tie the game in the 8th and to have Justin Masterson, traded in an unbelievably unlucky move by the Red Sox to the Indians, throw first pitch strikes to nearly all the hitters he faced setting him up for very lucky success.
The luckiest moment of the night came when Asdrubal Cabrera somehow defied being completely overmatched with a setup pitcher and continued his fortunate odds in the hitting department and somehow hit for power the day after hitting two homers and a double (out of five total hits). But it’s just the Sawwx bad luck they had to pitch to him because by a stroke of fate Cabrera is protected by Shin Soo Choo, who was hitting an unfathomably fortunate .350 in his last 10 games.
In fact, if not for the combination of good luck of their opponents and bad luck burdened on this Red Sox team they would’ve won 125 games last year and are on pace to win 115 this year despite the unlucky losing streak to start the season."

Interestingly, that recap on the ESPN Boston site was written by a Cleveland guy, Chuck Murr. I believe he used to write for Indians Ink, the scout.com Indians site.
Speaking of Scout peeps, is JenniferMarie still kicking around Indian fan forums? I used to see her post here and The Cleveland Fan, but not much since 2008.
She was one of the reasons I stopped posting on the scout.com Indians forum years ago. She was completely insane. Thank god she never found this place.
She has made a couple appearances here, but appears not to have stayed.
