While I was driving to school today, I was listening to the Tony Rizzo show. I heard them Talking about the possiblity of bringing back Thome. However, I didn't hear if this was based off an actual rumor or, simply their own opinions. I for one would love to see Thome back in Cleveland but, don't know if it is worth bringing in a 40 year old DH who would be yet another lefty in an already lefty heavy lineup. I was just curious if anyone else has heard this rumor and what your opinion is of it?

Consider the source?

I ask this in the most respectful way, but is there really any media source that is universally accepted?

During that time slot? Dan Patrick on Akron’s 1350 AM.
Rizzo and co. spend more time trying to be Jim Rome than they do immersing themselves in sports, or at least that’s what their opinions/analysis seem to imply.

I listen to Rizzo for entertainment only. If you want any decent sports analysis, turn off the radio.

That’s fair, and I agree about analysis on the radio. I’m sure if a show aimed for that, they’d be off the air by the 3rd week.
I know it’s a matter of personal taste, but I just don’t find anything about Rizzo’s show entertaining.

The Christian Science Monitor, of course .

This was also discussed during drive time yesterday on The Fan in Columbus.
They were arguing Hafner wouldn’t hold up and the Indians would need another DH.

Belle has a radio show??? Let me guess – The Joey and Albert Morning Zoo.

The local guys on the Fan are generally pretty worthless. However – they generally run the national guys instead on the 1460 AM channel when they’re running the local stooges on 97.1 FM. Unfortunately, I think they run Colin Blowhard on both channels.

I can’t take Cowherd. I can listen to the later guys (Common Man and Torg?) but I do not take one darn thing they say seriously.

The Common Man and Torg are awful — two idiots who have no idea what they’re talking and do nothing but make fun of every school and athlete besides OSU and other teams they like. I do listen to them sometimes on the way home from school just to hear what they’re discussing but I usually can’t take more than 2 or 3 minutes.
But I can get ESPN radio through my XM so I listen to the Scott Van Pelt show in the afternoon (with Ryan Russillo) and that’s a really good show. Those guys aren’t like the typical talk radio hosts as they try to avoid the hyperbole and overreaction of most sports talk shows. They are one of the few radio shows worth listening to, and I usually respect their opinions even if I don’t always agree.

I watch that on ESPN2 when I can.

You can also get Van Pelt and pals on 1460 AM after Blowhard is done. 1460 plays the national guys while the FM stations plays the local chuckleheads.

I didn’t know that, thanks for the info. It’s good to know that I can still listen to SVP if I cancel my XM.

Cowherd is awful. I like the Common Man and the Torg, but you’re correct in pointing out that they don’t say anything that should be taken to heart. They’re funny and have good chemistry though.
Trombone/creamy/soda.
I’m surprised that you find those two guys funny. I think their humor is mostly juvenile and idiotic.

Thome is at the top of the list of mid-year trade options. Heck, Minny won’t wait ’til the deadline to start unloading someone like him. And the bidding will get pretty high with the Yankees in the mix. Can Jim reject such a deal?

What are you even talking about?
The only scenario in which we even consider acquiring Thome is if Hafner is out for the season with an injury.
I wish

Were they talking about him coming back as a player? Because Bob DiBiasio recently was quoted (or paraphrased) in a newspaper saying he would like to bring Thome and Vizquel back as coaches when they retire.
I actually know for a fact that is not what they were talking about. They specifically mentioned that it would be much more intimidating if we were able to bring Thome off the bench rather than Everett.

Once again, trying to be as respectful as possible, are there any media personalities that you personally agree with. Everytime I have seen a name brought up, it seems that you have a negative opinion on them. Obviouslly I realize that everyone in the media has a bias toward everything or maybe they have the objective to simply entertain. But, if we choose to listen to nobody, how are we supposed to get information?

Absoultely. Who needs media for anything? If I want to learn more about power politics in Tajikistan then, hell, I’ll just hop on a plane and go observe it with my own eyes!

If politics in Tajikistan were conducted three hours per day, 162 days per year and televised live, then that might be a worthwhile comparison. As it is, however, if you want to evaluate Jim Thome, you’re better off watching baseball games and looking at stats than you are listening to anyone talk on the radio. Sports radio is almost uniformly worthless as an analytical resource. Even the best programming is more entertaining than anything else.
Except that most fans don’t have the time to watch every game and look up stats on every player. People have things to do, and listening to the radio while you’re driving or mowing your lawn or doing other things is one way to keep up with what’s happening in the sports world. Sure, much of the discussion you hear on the radio is idiotic blabbering, but everything isn’t bad. You can find people who can have intelligent discussions on the issues. And there are people out there — reporters, former players and coaches, etc. — who are more informed on the issues than we are and sometimes it’s good to hear their opinions. I think it’s unfair to paint everyone with such a broad stroke and claim all sports radio is worthless. That’s just not true.

You’ll find no argument from me. But, like Brad says, who has time to watch all these games? But i don’t listen to the radio either. That’s why I know basically nothing about other teams besides the Tribe.

I don’t agree with personalities.
I’m not sure that any Indians beat writer or columnist offers anything valuable in the way of insight. The best beat guy at the moment is Bastian, the best columnist is Pluto. They’re both good, nobody’s great, and everyone else is worthless at best.
Nobody is worth paying attention to on local radio. I had a couple nice chats with Roda, but he’s not that into baseball.
I’d like to see them add an SP at the deadline.

I would too, but what are the options?

And, what are we willing to give up? Trading Huff and Beau Mills ain’t gonna do it. We’d have to be willing to sacrifice a desirable prospect or two to get a pitcher who could actually help — I don’t see the Indians giving up a really TOP prospect who projects as a starting player like Chisenhall, Pomerantz or Kipnis. Who do we have as trade bait ? Gomez? I’m not sure the players we’d be willing to part with will bring the pitcher we want.
We’re trading for contracts. The Indians’ policy has been that we’ve been willing to pay salaries of veterans we’re unloading in order to get better prospects. The inverse still applies – if we’re willing to add salaries, the quality of the prospects we’re giving up decreases. At least one, maybe two of the quartet of Donald/Phelps/Kipnis/Valbuena is expendable right now.
