Game 46: Red Sox 4, Indians 2
Jason Varitek had a very good game; the aging Boston catcher not only hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, but actually threw out a couple of runners. The Indians were trying to run every chance they got because of Varitek's poor arm, but tonight at least the percentages didn't reflect reality.
Wildness hurt Fausto Carmona and the Indians in the third inning, as a hit batter and a walk both came around to score. Carmona would give up four runs, but he pitched into the ninth, and at times looked very good. But Josh Beckett and the bullpen were better.
Ezequiel Carrera drove in the first run of the evening with a non-bunt single in the third, and Travis Buck took Jonathan Papelbon deep in the ninth. Between those two runs, the Indians couldn't capitalize on the few scoring chances they had.

Was thinking the same. Last night seemed like a much bigger win emotional than the period of the season would dictate. Tonight’s loss didn’t feel like that big a deal, for whatever reason.

More of the same from Fausto. He’s now allowed runs in 19 different innings this season. Thirteen have been multiple-run innings.
The comments about Fausto at Cleveland.com are unreal. I believe the phrase “insufferable bum” was used.

Why do you do that to yourself? I’d rather go to the NYC DMV without bringing reading material.

Ugh. I’m still recovering from my last new license. 2.5 hours on line and when I finally got to the front they told me I had an unpaid parking ticket (damn zipcar!) from 2005 (this was in 2010) and couldn’t issue me the license until it was paid … and that they couldn’t accept my payment. I had to go to a different office, which had already closed for the day. But I did have reading material. So it wasn’t as bad as reading Livingston’s piece on bunting today, and the subsequent comments.

Yes. That has nothing to do with my comment. My comment is an explanation of how, despite his positive numbers, his ERA is where it is. And, 11 starts into the season, it may be more than a coincidence and a real problem that he’s having out of the stretch.
The numbers you cite are good, but the two innings where he wasn’t able to make quality pitches got him beat.
Yes, it seems he has a men on base issue. Whether its a mechanical difference from the stretch, tipping of pitches, mental loss of focus or some combo is hard to tell, but its real.
The two biggest plays last night were the HBP and Carrera’s mishap. Leadoff man on is a big red flag for Fausto right now.
Carrera made an ERROR, so those runs should have been unearned.

eh, that ball was tough. Are you confident grady would have made that play? Would grady have even been in range to make it?
He did well against a tough BOS lineup. Kept the club very much in the game.

A week ago a loss like this would have devastated me and had me convinced the shoe was dropping like a guillotine. But now, I’m just convinced we take the series this afternoon.

I know this is a Steve Martin bit, but the metaphor is completely escaping me.

Your shoe “dropping like a guillotine” badly mixed metaphor.

Just because I didn’t pick up on it doesn’t mean it’s badly mixed. I miss shit like that all the time. But thanks for making me go back and watch some old Steve Martin bits on YouTube.

Realistically, Fausto pitched 8 innings and gave up three runs, with a miniscule WHIP and a lot of missed bats. That’s a strong performance. We need to win this kind of game.
Sure, but Boston would say the same thing this morning. Hard to beat Clay and Beckett back to back. The Tribe played well, just win the series today. Gotta lose some of these well played games eventually.
Right, Boston feels like they could have won the first game, and we feel like we could have won this one. Someone’s got to lose, even if both teams play well.

“non-bunt” needs to be used everytime Ezequiel doesn’t bunt.

Day game after a night game. The catcher who started the night game usually gets the following day game off.

Right. But this C can play 1B or DH.

Acta tried to give him a day off the other day and he ended up pinch-hitting and catching the end of the game. I think Acta wants to give Santana a full day off.

I think we all want Santana to get a full day off.

It’s against a lefty, so Duncan and Kearns are less easy. Everett for Gramps and Marson for Santana makes sense with the quick turnaround. Let’s see if this lineup can score a few rurns.

Those watching may need to score a few rums. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

Frustrating game to be at. Felt like every time we got a runner on Boston’s pitchers really clamped down. I thought for sure that ball LaPorta hit in the ninth would be off the wall, but I was in the bleachers so I didn’t get to see how close it came.
At least I got to see Buck go deep.

The sooner we can keep Kearns on the bench the better.

Is it weird to anyone else that they’re supposed to be bring him back for the TBR series? Shouldn’t he stay off turf when possible?

Somewhat (but not entirely) subjectively, I think this was “good Fausto.” In part because “bad Fausto” is way worse than this. TribeJay’s observation notwithstanding, I think the simple fact is that Fausto ran into a very good lineup and a little bad luck tonight.
Except for one inning and a bad pitch to Varitek, he looked downright dominant.
