I’m not raising my hand.

Do I think he’ll shut out the Jays? No.

Do I think he’ll pitch better than last time? Yes.

I think this game is gonna come down to the offense. If they can put up 5-6 runs, I think they win.

Apparently Chris Berman is covering the St. Louis game on ESPN.

by JRontherim on May 31, 2011 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

TOR announcers thought Droobs was trying to roll the ball over to second base when he struck out. If that’s the case, why not bunt? I loathe the notion of trying to hit the ball to the right side of the infield with a man on second. And it did indeed look like he was trying to do that.

by tabler84 on May 31, 2011 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

No kidding. If he’s spotting 94 away, go that way with it and try your luck. You’re not going to make anything good happen trying to pull that.

Trombone/creamy/soda.

by Joel D on May 31, 2011 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Right. Don’t try to hit hte ball right or left. HIT THE DAMN THING HARD

by Gradyforpresident on May 31, 2011 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, luckily for us his offensive performances aren’t directly tied to his defensive performances on a nightly basis. It’s the same deal, though. He’s either really good with the glove or he’ll botch a couple sharply hit grounders a game (he’s done the former a lot more frequently than the latter so far this season, it seems at least).

While Little Caesars owns the “Pizza! Pizza!” trademark in the U.S., the unaffiliated Pizza Pizza restaurant chain owns the Canadian trademark. by JimmyAB on May 31, 2011 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

how the hell does talbot do it? the fastest i’ve seen him throw is like 91 and his stuff isn’t that good.. and it’s not like he has tomlin’s control either.

by tr1betime on May 31, 2011 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

I totally cannot figure him out. I think his changeup must be more deceptive than it looks.

by bupalos on May 31, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He was touching 95 his last outing before his injury in Cali.

by ahowie on May 31, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

95? Like to see that gun. 92 I’d say.

by bupalos on May 31, 2011 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He certainly doesn’t sit anywhere near the mid-90s, but that game he was throwing his usual stuff and speed (very effectively) and then late in the game (I want to say the 8th or so because I think he went at least 8 1/3 or 2/3) he found another gear. But yeah, usually he’s low 90s.

by ahowie on May 31, 2011 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

He just looks like he gets away with a lot to me. I mean, that first fatty to Bautista was 91 and straight right down the middle to their best hitter. I feel like every outing has a bunch of that. I’m very happy to be wrong though.

by bupalos on May 31, 2011 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

i will say though i dont think ive ever seen him get this much movement on his pitches. some of these are nasty

by tr1betime on May 31, 2011 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed. much movement tonight. the changeup seems to tail in.

by bupalos on May 31, 2011 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

We tend to be overly generous with our “soft-tosser” designations. Talbot’s fastball averaged 91 last year, which in part reflects the fact that he uses a couple different fastballs, faster and slower, that get classified together. He regularly topped 93 last year, and topped 95 in a few outings.

by APV on May 31, 2011 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I still don’t feel like I’ve seen the 95MPH talbot fastball. Morrow was throwing 95 tonight. You think you’ve seen Talbot throw those?

by bupalos on May 31, 2011 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

These readings vary from park to park, of course, and no, I don’t think Talbot has Morrow’s velocity. But he has more life on his fastball than I think we give him credit for.

by APV on May 31, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I definitely agree with that last part.

by ahowie on May 31, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Talbot’s deception and movement aren’t amazing — a few guys have tougher stuff to hit at 92 than he has at 95. His stuff isn’t overpowering, but still, 95 is 95.

by Jay on May 31, 2011 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Just saying, I think Talbot’s fastball has late movement

There were no outs with runners on first and second. One run has to be seen as a positive result, two flyouts as a negative one.

So, a positive result through negative actions.

As of a couple of days ago: approximately 124 in AL Central, and 122 in AL, all teams. For the last ten AL champs, something around 120. LaPorta was 9th in the AL at 116.

by YoDaddyWags on Jun 1, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Here’s how I see it:

  • He’s not a 19th round draft pick, he’s a well-bonused first-rounder.
  • He wasn’t the throw-in in some trade, he was the main return for the incumbent Cy Young.
  • He’s not an infielder.
  • He’s not a rookie.
  • He’s not in his early 20s anymore.

This guy should be mashing, and we should hate on his ass if he doesn’t.

-He’s a mediocre hitter
-He has meaningful holes in his swing
-We have no reason, at this point, to expect him to turn into more than what he is right now
-We don’t have a replacement for him lingering in AAA
-There’s no reason to get too worked up about his production or lack thereof; he is what he is

by 9James on May 31, 2011 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

Tying run must be on deck for a save.

by doowop on May 31, 2011 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

3 Possible Saves:

1) Pitch 3+ innings while winning and finish the game.
2) Enter with the score within a certain number of runs equal to the number of outs remaining (max of 3 runs) and finish the game
3) Enter with the tying run on deck, and finish the game.

It was a 3 run lead, but there was only 1 out left, so the score would have either needed to be a 1 or 2 run lead (2 runs would mean that the tying run was on deck).

In other words, the save makes no sense.
