As we near the trade deadline and the Indians remain atop the Central by a game over the Tigers, it has become clear that we will finally be buyers. With our most obvious need being an outfield bat, especially with the (new) injury to Grady, I'm curious what people would be willing to give up. The players to me who are absolutely off-limits, would be: Pomeranz, White, Chisenhall and our starting lineup/rotation. But after hearing Terry Pluto make a valid point, that we have NO outfielder in the upper, middle or even lower levels of our farm system who currently projects to be a stud at the major league level, I am inclined to believe that we not only need an outfielder for this year but possibly for the next couple years. This is of course assuming that Grady's injury could be very serious, since Grady himself said it feels like what happened to his left knee last year. The guy who jumps out, that is potentially available, and also controllable through 2013, is Hunter Pence. Now the Astros would have to be offered a very good deal to part with him, but in my mind, acquiring him would solidify our outfield for not only this year but for the next couple years, and would also provide us with the power right handed bat we DESPERATELY need in our lineup.
Personally, though I really like Kipnis, I'd be willing to build a package around him if it meant acquiring a guy like Pence. However, it would only be for a guy of Pence's caliber that i'd be willing to trade Kipnis. A Ryan Ludwick or a Josh Wilingham is hardly worth anyone even close to top prospect status in my opinion. I also think we have plenty of depth at the middle infield positions and really liked what i saw from Jason Donald last year, and think he could be a very serviceable major league second basemen for years to come.
So my question is, as a fan, what would you be willing to give up for a guy like Hunter Pence? (assuming he's available)
