He once dented a baseball. Oh and he has also had 4 HR balls in the air at the same time.

I sincerely doubt both of those, though I did once give up a HR that has shared air time with every subsequent HR.
Trombone/creamy/soda.
I’ve personally talked to Metcalf (his HS coach) and he told me the story about the four balls in the air. Said at one time there was video, I asked to see it but he said it was edited for news and deleted. LaPorta says it was three not four.
As for the dented ball…there was a picture of it in the local papers down there. But I never saw it.

Yeah, but Jay pointed out his BAbip in another thread. He’ll be over-priced.
"By being the manager and just playing whoever I want." - Acta on how he would choose to split playing time between Kearns and Buck.
I didn’t see the post, but I believe it for this year. However, he has a career .291/.339/.481 line. Can’t all be luck.
His BAbip is .381 compared with .327 for his career. It is probably 90% luck, and anyway, why is everyone so jazzed about a guy with an 820 OPS?
For corner outfields, it was 768 for outfielders and 791 for right fielders.
I’m not necessarily saying Pence is the end all be all, but if the price isn’t ridiculously steep, it might be worth it.
Ed Wade is going to be the issue. He will want Kipinis, White, Pomeranz, Abener Abreu, Slider, What’shisname, PBTNL, Antonietti and Cedar Point.
Ed Wade is not the guy you trade with to acquire Pence, he’s the guy you trade with to unload Pence.

Going on what I believe to be are the most talented guys in the system, I think a reasonable trade would be a bullpen arm , one of the AAA starters (Gomez, Huff, McAlister) and Kipnis or Phelps.
Way too much.
@grantgw - sports and Cleveland and Columbus stuff
by woodsmeister on Jul 19, 2011 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe. I don’t see the AAA guys as anything more than 4/5 guys at their best. Painful as it may be to give up a bullpen arm, you gotta give up value to get value. Maybe Phelps/Kipnis puts it over the top, but I’m fine with the first two parts.
Just so you know what your saying, the 4/5 guy would be under control for at least three years. The bullpen guy depends, lets say a year and for kicks and say an average 2B. Your talking 10 productive/average seasons for 1.5 seasons of average RF. Doeas that still sound fair?
I don’t value bullpen guys as great commodities because of how much they bounce up and down. As for as the 4/5 thing, in a vacuum, I like your reasoning. But I think between Gomez, Huff, McCalister (and maybe Barnes) they have enough of those guys that they can afford to risk giving one of them up to make a run this year.
Hunter Pence ain’t worth it. That’s the long and short of it. Have you even looked at another available player?
It’s not Hunter Pence or no trade. You have to understand that.
Steel Nick
They can be deployed with some craft, however.
In addition, there’s no way to know how Pence does in the AL.
Sure, but how much better? Pence won’t be cheap in terms of talent and is not cheap in terms of salary.
And away from Minute Maid (is it still called that?) he under .800 OPS.

After Travis Buck got hit in the head, I went to plunkeveryone.com to see if I could glean anything interesting. I did notice that among the leaderboards on the site on the dropdown menus in the right hand sidebar among the available splits is leaders being hit by a pitch in parks named after orange juice, insurance companies, beer, banks, people, telecoms and teams.
@grantgw - sports and Cleveland and Columbus stuff
by woodsmeister on Jul 19, 2011 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions
There’s nothing wrong with Hunter Pence. The problem is that he will not come with the right price tag. Everyone can say “Yeah but for the right price…” all they want. He’s still going to cost more than he’s worth.
Steel Nick
We don’t know that because we don’t know what it would cost to get him. I also have issues assuming that the prospects traded are going to turn out well. I don’t know that any of the tribe’s prospects, aside from Pomeranz, are sure things to become everyday players. To assume that whatever, and for whomever, the Indians make a play for will be done by overpaying is too quick a judgment to make.
Right. I give up a AA guy not named Pomeranz and an A guy with some upside. Nothing more. They will want multiple guys in our top 10. I say no.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jul 19, 2011 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
So if the deal was for Weglarz or Washington or someone like that, you’d nix it on that alone? I don’t think its a good idea to fall in love for prospects just because their ours.
At this point, if Weglarz can seal an envelope without a DL stint, I’d be impressed.
by gte619n on Jul 19, 2011 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Depending on what list you look it, Washington and Weglarz are part of the top ten. If you value McCalister more, fine, but I wouldn’t rule out our top prospects just for the sake of being our top guys.
We’re not, but your entire reasoning so far for giving them away is “well what if they don’t do anything?” Which is horrible reasoning.
Steel Nick
That’s not how I mean it to come off. But I don’t think our guys are locks to be so great as to suggest that we shouldn’t think about unloading them when there is a chance to make some noise this season.
I think with the right fielder a team can take some hits on the defensive side of things. Rocket arm aside, Choo doesn’t exactly shine out there, either.
You can’t consider right fielders without considering their arms.
@grantgw - sports and Cleveland and Columbus stuff

Considering the fact that we currently have Austin Kearns out there, I doubt a prospective trade target’s arm is going to be a deal-breaker.

The Indians should never be compared to the Pirates, at least for the era concerning the last twenty years. One of these organizations has been quite successful and one has made losing into an art form.
I like them because a friend who thinks he’s knowledgeable, and is from Pittsburgh, went ballistic when they traded McLouth. Said he was done rooting for a team that “wouldn’t pay good players.” I tried to tell him that McLouth was one of the worst players in the game, but he wouldn’t hear it. So now I want the Pirates to win so he can suck it.

Bicycle racing is only slightly more entertaining than watching an endless loop of Derek Jeter highlights.
I think it’s something that’s difficult to appreciate unless you ride at least a little. The amount of pain that goes into riding up a mountain is incredible. Doing it that fast is just incredible, and then the attacking and tactics are amazing.
I’ve “cracked” before climbing around Colorado with my friends, and you feel like you’re dying. It’s like a switch gets flipped and the pain is excrutiating and you’ve just got nothing to respond with. It’s incredible to watch these guys do it in the tour, whether they’re doping or not.

that’s the right defense there. Valbuena doesn’t get a great jump because of big swing/broken bat. Bad luck for us there.

loads the bases, perez is wild, a homer wasn’t likely—and valencia can hit a SF just as easily.

The Twins might tie or win this ballgame for the simple reason that Francisco Liriano hit Travis Buck in the head and Valbueana was forced to play LF.

Twins baseball, everybody. They win on two bloops in front of an outfielder who’s only out there because a better player was hit in the head by a pitched ball. Their not very good outfielder luck into baseballs they have no business catching and our not very good infielder playing the outfield can’t get to the baseball.
I hate the Twins.

What in the hell would you two be “skeptical” of? Enlighten me. Did you think Brantley had his feet up on a table with a piece of straw sticking out his mouth, shaking his head as Acta asked him to suit up? Think for a second before agreeing with RICK MANNING.

I (and Manning) am not totally blaming Michael Brantley, but the lack of Michael Brantley sure did hugely contribute to this loss.

Steel Nick
by nickjs21 on Jul 19, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I suppose. I also am reminded why I stopped reading comments on blogs. Context and tone are misread or ignored and the entire discussion turns to semantics and obsession over insignificant topics.
I apologize that I so offended you in my reaction to Manning’s comment of “where was Brantley?” We lost a game in a really difficult way. One of the guys that could have made a difference was a last second scratch for a “stomach ailment” and we were left with a guy out of position. I am frustrated at a slow, out of position LF and we had a speedy good LF on the bench who was healthy very recently and not injured.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jul 19, 2011 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s fine, but I don’t think I’m the one taking anything out of context. You, likely and understandably mad over a loss, questioned Brantley’s commitment to being on the field (and you did) with no reason to do so. It was completely misplaced blame. You can’t hang that one on the comments sections of blogs.
Steel Nick
I questioned the decision to have Brantley unavailable late in the game, whoever made that decision. Neither of us know what his condition was, but I’m guessing he (and/or Acta) are second-guessing taht decision now.
I also expressed frustration at ALL the factors that led to Valbuena’s presence in LF at the end of a 1-run game and the bending of these two items and subsequent discussion trying to separate those two likely wouldn’t have happened if you were sitting next to me.
by Ryan Kelsey on Jul 19, 2011 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, it did. So did the Indians’ failure to hit with RISP. If Liriano doesn’t hit Travis Buck in the head with a pitch, Brantley’s non-presence is a nonfactor.

But its just hard for me to accept.
Give me one reason you have to believe anything other than “Brantley was too sick to play.”
Steel Nick
Its hard to accept or swallow the entire situation. Also, he just played 18 innings yesterday, got 20 hours of rest and then couldn’t play in a huge spot? It just sucks

“It just sucks” and “he hasn’t played in 20 hours” are not evidence that he was dogging it.

But its hard to accept.
hard to swallow
1. difficult to accept The terms of the agreement were hard to swallow, but I needed the work. My father’s anger was very hard to swallow.
The statement doesn’t have anything to do with the culpability of Brantley’s toughness. It just is a crappy situation.

by Ryan Kelsey on Jul 19, 2011 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions
If we’re talking about two different things, I apologize, and I will steer it back to my original question as a sort of final statement on my part. Then we can walk away.
Brantley was too sick to play. You claimed to be skeptical of the fact that he was too sick to play. I suggested you had no reason to be, and if you do, you haven’t shown one.
Steel Nick
I was skeptical, admittedly in the heat of the moment, because he played 18 innings yesterday and seemed fine and played well. He was also in the lineup up until just before the game, suggesting either some indecision by Brantley or Acta or that one of them considered having him go out there anyway. Plus I disagree with the statement “if you are too sick then you are too sick”. He could have been less than 100%, boderline, and they decided to give him teh day off. But that Calculus could have change after some time to get better and with the situation became more dicey for the team. Such judgment calls are made all the time in a long season.
Maybe he was incapacitated and couldn’t lift his head off the toilet seat through the 9th. Maybe Acta wanted to make sure he was fresh for tomorrow. We don’t know. I don’t have evidence, but in search for what went wrong in a tough loss, I was skeptical given the circumstance.

Apparently it was pretty bad. Either that or Brantley doesn’t care about winning games in the middle of the tightest playoff race of his young career. I’m going to stick with the “Brantley sick, Manning stupid” theory for now.
