Game 85: Indians 5, Yankees 3
Phil Hughes was making his first start in almost three months, and the Indians made sure it was a short one. They scored two runs off him in the first, making him throw close to 30 pitches. His fastball was sitting in the low 90s, several mph below where he usually is, and he couldn't throw it by Tribe bats.
Meanwhile, Justin Masterson dominated the Yankees for eight innings, throwing sinker after sinker.
Brooks Baseball's PitchFX tool shows that Justin essentially go through his outing throwing four-seam and two-seam fastballs. Given how well he was spotting the fastball, he didn't need need an off-speed pitch.

Pitch Type LWTS correspond to how many runs were likely to score on a particular pitch based on average run expectancy when each pitch was thrown and what happened as a result. Negative scores indicate more effective pitches.
Time to Plate is the time, in seconds, that it takes an average pitch of this type to reach the plate. This is strongly correlated with velocity, but also factors in movement.
Matt LaPorta returned from the DL, and despite not having an at-bat of any kind in 19 days, he was locked in at the plate, going 2-for-4. His return will mean that Carlos Santana will be a full-time catcher again, and will shift Lou Marson back to the bench.
Lonnie Chisenhall smoked his first major-league home run in the seventh inning, against a left-handed reliever to boot. The conventional wisdom seems to be that the Indians will need to platoon someone with Chisenhall until he gets betters better against left-handed pitching, though it's tough for a hitter to get better against something he never faces. The blast finally bumped the Tribe lead to 3-0, and they would need would need more insurance before the night was over.
The Indians added two more runs in the eighth thanks to Sergio Mitre's wildness. The Yankee reliever walked three batters, including Carlos Santana with the bases loaded. Grady Sizemore followed with a sacrifice fly, and the Indians went into the ninth with a 5-0 lead.
Vinnie Pestano was called on to finish things off, but he didn't have it, although Michael Brantley took a bad route to Nick Swisher's line drive. He allowed the first three to reach, and he was pulled with runners on second and third with nobody out and a run in. Chris Perez calmed things down, allowing two more runs to score, but both coming on outs. He struck out Brett Gardner to end the game.
And now for the Derek Jeter 3,000 hit watch: he's not there yet.

Recorded game (started 11am) and avoided temptation to peek at LGT or MLB scores during the day. Great game, plenty of fist pumps and yells whilst watching. Enjoyed explaining to my boys why the Cabrera’s were not brothers and introducing them to Pronk, Grady and Rage.
One day I'll get over to watch the Tribe play

This. Gotta say that NZTF is probably the most dedicated we have here.

I think we missed a big part of the story, which is the fact that we left 54 men on base. We made it a lot more difficult than we had to.
I can’t help but wonder if Masterson will have to offer a better balance of pitches. I’m too lazy to look it up now, but – maybe Spahn? – a great pitcher once said that pitching is about keeping hitters off balance, and disrupting their timing. Masterson does so many things well, but he certainly does not disrupt timing or balance.
That said, Masterson’s performance last night reminds me very much of Fausto’s best performances in 2007. You know what pitch is coming, but it’s moving so much in the zone, and it’s so heavy that it’s hard to square up.
The Yankees sure seemed off-balance against Masterson (it wasn’t the case of being overpowered).

Lots of pitchers have said that (here’s Bert Blyleven, for example), but Spahn did say it, too:
All hitters are egotists. I think the job of all pitchers is to throw the timing off of the hitters. Everybody wants to hit the ball out of the park and I wanted to make it as tough as I could to keep it from going out.
Also, I feel like we’re on the verge of being able to deal Masterson for Buckholz, which would rectify the front office’s obvious mistake, as I understand it.

Drabek always seemed so uninteresting to me. I don’t get the craze over him.

I would still do that swap in a second, though.

As someone mentioned on Twitter last night, aren’t we glad that the Indians didn’t move Masterson to the bullpen last year when many people were calling for that?
I, for one suggested it, and glad I defer to the people who know what they are doing. I am wondering what kind of impact Belcher has had on turning him into such a solid starter.
Other than perhaps helping him get his body under control and essentially drop the change, I’m not so sure Masterson is doing a whole lot differently. His walk rates are down, but so are his K rates. His HR/FB rate is probably unsustainable (4.3%) and interestingly enough, his BABIP is lower (.294) despite a higher LD% (18.1%) – that may adjust dramatically if it continues. Masterson has been tremendous, but his ERA could probably just as easily be a full point higher.
He has abandoned his failed changeup experiment from a year ago

Count me as one who thought that he HAD TO HAVE a good circle change to use in lefties.

I was one that said Masterson needed to have a third pitch, probably a changeup. Well, he hasn’t done that, but he has added a third pitch in a way. He was pinpoint in his control when coming inside to Yankee LH hitters. This is what he has changed from last year, and his stuff is so good that if he continues to have that command, he doesn’t need that extra pitch. Just go with his two fastballs and his slider.
Brett Gardner wanted nothing to do with Justin Masterson.
I just wanted a competitive at-bat against a LHP from Chisenhall…that qualified. To me, it’s not about getting opportunities against lefties to learn how to hit against them. It’s about learning how to hit at the MLB-level and gaining confidence first against all pitchers…then he can work on his approach to lefites. As long as they’re in contention the next couple of years, I think Manny will mix him in against lefties, but if he has a good platoon alternative, he’ll go with that option more often than not.
As noted above, Lookout Landing was wrong – 103 of Masterson’s 112 pitchers were fastballs, but they weren’t all sinkers.
And even though he went 0-4, I thought Grady still looked pretty good…I’m telling you, I’m optimistic for a nice series this weekend.
I like the pitching matchups for this Toronto series. It would be nice to go the break on a high note.
I’d prefer more, but I’ll be satisfied with a split. Beating the Yankees in a series will keep me on a high note for at least another week.
I don’t think we can settle for splitting with a sub-.500 team at home. And the Tigers get to play the Royals during this stretch. It would be great to build our lead a little before the ASB.

First Pitch Strikes
I have often wondered why Manny can spout off tons of statistics that support the importance of pitchers getting their first pitch over the plate, yet doesn’t seem to push his batters to attack the first pitch when opposing pitchers have been dealing first-pitch strikes all night long.
I often wonder why you can spout off opinions without stopping to think about what you’re saying.
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
Hey tough guy, does it occur to you that you might be wrong?
Tell me what pitch it was that Hafner hit last night.
