Spawn of Ray Fosse

With the release of Jensen Lewis recently, I was disheartened because I thought that it closed one of the longest transaction trails that I have ever found for a player. Then I remembered that John Drennen is still with the franchise and has kept a trail that started 46 years ago alive. However, that pulse is barely hanging on as Drennen is now an old 24 in AA with a 267/342/811 split. He is in his seventh season in the minors and will become a minor league free agent most likely at season’s end. And I doubt that he will get dealt by Antonetti this year.

When Drennen does vacate the roster, this will leave Joe Smith, Luis Valbuena and Cory Kluber as the holders of the longest time transaction. This would be 34 years from the selection of Jerry Dybzinski in the 15th round of the 1977 draft. Kluber only has nine transactions to Smith and Valbuena’s eleven, but they still have the oldest transactions after Drennen.

The next longest time frame would default to he who has no name, Adam Miller. He can trace his lineage back to the selection of Jim Thome in the 13th round of the 1989 draft. Granted it is only two transactions, but still would be the next longest.

This list does not include any players not currently designated by mlb.com’s rosters. I do believe some injured players such as Jason Knapp are still with the Tribe and recent 2011 signees who have not been assigned to a team are not listed here. If there are some significant trades at the July and August deadlines, I will repost this article again with the changes.

Notes: I have included compensation draft picks as being more than one degree as the Indians obtained that pick based on a player they formally held rights to. Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December 05 would be 2006). Additionally, whenever I could not find confirmation of an amateur free agent signing, the year defaults to their first appearance. [aFA = amateur free agent, mFA = minor league free agent]
