Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

Hafner to the DL. I suppose this clears the way for the old warrior to ride home and lead us to glory. We can joke about that, but I'll have to hear compelling reasons not to pursue it now.

Thome since the ASB: 300/382/589/971, 8 2B and 6 HR in 102 PAs. BABIP of .368 in that span. Can’t think 6 weeks of a lefty platoon DH can be worth that much to Minny, 13 games behind.

We apparently claimed Rich Harden but could not work out a deal. Can’t link at work sorry.

I’m 100% behind this. I’m also 100% sure Chicago would try to block any claim we put in.

Disclaimer: I know very little about the waiver process. And I was probably overreacting to Buster Olney on Twitter, who made it sound perfectly likely.

by tabler84 on Aug 22, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Basically the league the player is currently in gets first dibs on claims on reverse order of record. So worst to first in AL. Any team can claim but would have to absorb entire contract if the player’s current team was okay with not receiving compensation in return.

The player’s current team could also threaten to pull the player back from waivers unless they come to satisfactory trading terms. If the teams can’t come to an agreement, then he will remain with his current club and no other team can make an offer for him.

Once a player is claimed by a team, then the teams with better records and in the other league have no chance at him. So if Chicago made a claim, there is 0 chance he comes to Cleveland.

by Roger Dorn on Aug 22, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

So Cleveland made a claim on Harden, there was no opportunity for any team with a better record than us to acquire Harden.

by Roger Dorn on Aug 22, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

If the deal doesn’t work out then no other claims can be made?

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

hence when you hear a team “blocked” it

by Roger Dorn on Aug 22, 2011 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

There are potential 40-man issues to think about when you claim guys off waivers, though I don’t know if the White Sox would have hesitations because of this. They do have another 3 years and $44 million worth of Adam Dunn, the lucky devils.

He does somehow have a .333/.390/.472 line against Cleveland.

That man has always punished us, even in interleague.

Well, I believe that if CHW claimed him and didn’t work out a deal on purpose to block him from us, the Twins could actually put him on waivers a second time. However, the second time, they would not have the ability to pull him back in the event a deal was not worked out with the claiming team, so they most likely would just be saving money on his contract.

At that point, CHW would have to be willing to pay his salary in order to place another claim, which I guess is still likely. Either way, if the White Sox made a claim on him on his first time through waivers, I don’t believe it necessarily means that we have 0 chance to get him in the end.

It’s also possible that I have some of my facts wrong here.

Not true. One and done for each waiver period.

by Jay on Aug 23, 2011 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

If a deal can’t be worked out or the team doesn’t want to trade that player, he can be pulled back off waivers once in August. If he is placed on waivers again before September, he can’t be recalled a second time.

This is from YDW’s comment in the Series Preview thread. I believe he got it straight from Jayson Stark. Is this not correct?

by TKilbane on Aug 23, 2011 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

You know what, it is correct. I forgot about that wrinkle, assuming I ever knew it.

I’ll tell you a secret: Occasionally, I have to look something up instead of just answering off the top of my head.

I can not be 100% behind it based solely on how insufferable Hammy would be to listen to.

Last year’s record. Ours was worse, we get first crack at the waiver.
