Jim Thome approves trade, returns to Indians
It's official, Jim Thome has waived his no-trade clause to allow the Indians to acquire him from the Twins for the stretch run for a player to be named later. More details momentarily.
[UPDATE (Ryan)]: The PTBNL, according to Jordan Bastian, will be chosen by the Twins by October 15th from a list of players agreed to by the two clubs. Thome will be in the lineup in time for Friday's game, and will wear his customary #25.

Now that I’ve said it, hit a couple more out of here for us and enjoy your spot in the HoF!

Any word on who is on the PTBNL list? I’m assuming it’s nobody meaningful. Anyway, this is absolutely good news for the Tribe, considering some of the lineups that injuries have forced us to run out there. Hopefully it spurs a series of rather unlikely events that ends with us playing at 165 times this year.

It’s exciting, but I fear it’s a week or so too late…

Irrationally excited for this. Thome was always my favorite as a kid.

A girl on my softball team in 5th grade always did the point the bat thing before she was up.

I’ve hated Jim for years now, but I just let out a huge whoop when I heard the news. Welcome back you lumberjack.

I think it’s fair to say that the Dolans promised a statue. I don’t know if there was anything in the actual contract offer, but there was a presentation to say, this is what your place in club history is going to look like, you’ll be next to Bob Feller.
And if he’d stayed, even through the Philly contract, and certainly through the Philly and White Sox contracts, he’d probably have deserved it.
Il faut d'abord durer.
There was no White Sox contract. He was traded there from Philly and played out the Phillies contract in Chicago, except for one final month in LA. Chicago picked up the 2009 club option from the original Philly deal. After that, he signed two one-year deals with the Twins for 2010 and 2011.
Right, I worded that poorly. I meant that if he’d stayed in Cleveland (and produced at the same levels) that he instead played in Philly and Chicago, but obviously didn’t convey that at all.
The part I either didn’t know about or had long since forgotten was a player deal that the White Sox had picked up a players option. I would have assumed that with everything else he got from the Phillies, his option would have vested with any trade.
Il faut d'abord durer.
That type of clause is far from standard. There are teams dumb enough both to overpay for a player and to give him no-trade protections, such as that type of clause. But in general, that kind of clause should be more expected in a contract that is club-friendly on the dollars and years, like Grady’s, to protect the player from being on a club-friendly deal on the wrong club.
Here’s a bright idea for clubs in the future: no-trade clauses should be void after July 31. They really can’t be justified after that point.
I’m sure you’re right; I think I assumed those clauses are somewhat common for big name players because oftentimes they seem to come up around the trade deadline. Probably a combination of selective memory on my part and club-friendly contracts being more commonly shopped.
In what sense do you mean that they can’t be justified after the non-waiver deadline?
Il faut d'abord durer.
I agree with that point, but by the same token I have a hard time imagining there’d be a place so awful that you can’t go there for a few baseball seasons (when, even then, you only spend half your time in that place) and make millions upon millions of dollars?
If you’re a player negotiating for a no-trade clause, I’m not sure there’d be a legitimate distinction to give up that clause of July 31st, except for more money.
Il faut d'abord durer.
Well, here’s the thing. Limited or total no-trade protection prior to July 31 makes some sense in that it allows a player to have a role in determining where he does and doesn’t want to go. There are multiple potential trading partners, and the player wants to have a say.
After July 31, there aren’t multiple trading partners. The Twins could trade with the Indians and nobody else. So the trade protection doesn’t just limit the club, it takes them out of the trade market entirely. I’m just saying, if I’m a GM, that’s a concession I’m asking for and probably can get.
Fun stuff. More tidy than Lofton in 07 but a little less exciting after last week. Hammy call of first home run figures to be a keeper.

Is Tomlin to DL the initial move to make room for Thome? Hopefully Brantley and Choo are not DL candidates.

Like everyone else, I can like this trade. But I will absolutely love it if the Tigers would only go on a six game losing streak while Jimmy powers us to six straight wins. So it comes down to thus: do the Tigers, those guys who like to pose after every home run and even some foul balls, have any sense of history?
This could be a great baseball story, but the Tigers need to cooperate, and they will if they really love baseball.

You really can’t appreciate LGT unless you tiptoed over to the Twins SBN site, only to see our new DH referred to as “Jimmer”, “Jimmers”, and “Jimmer-Jammer”.

I am always hugely disappointed when I go to another SBN site, though I guess I should qualify that as fan site/blog these days, since I do like the bigger news type sites. Even my favorite teams in other sports, the quality of the site is so far down compared to this, I’m stunned. It’s worse when you go to an opposing team’s site, I can almost never do it.

Thome’s 40. He wants a ring. His time is running out. We’re down but not out. 35 games to make up 6.5. I think we’re going to see some serious at bats. Let’s Go Thome!
I do like that he will bring a “win now” mentality. A presence that will hopefully inspire some younger bats.
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
“Now, y’see, whatcha wanna do is jess, take a big ol’ cut like Jimmy do, heeya. Square up on ball. Hit it real good, now. Get some air unner the thang.”

I think we’re stuck in a quandary of quantum physics here. You keep calling him The Door, and it’s impossible for a player with such a dumb nickname to be awesome. Therefore, we are stuck in a reality where all probable and improbable events add up to LaPorta becoming a terrible player. All because you are stuck on this dumb nickname.
Can’t you call him something cooler, like the Dust Cover, or the Tampon?

This probably confirms that Hafner will be out for the year. I think Brantley is going on the DL to make room for Thome.
Even if we get Thome at DH, unless he goes on a huge tear, I really dont see him making a significant impact expect maybe in moral. Brantley, Sizemore, Hafner, Kipnis are all still on the DL, and we will still be seeing Donald, Zeke, and Marson all too often.
Sizemore and Kipnis should be coming off the DL soon. Kipnis should be off by the end of this next series if not sooner. Sizemore could be up middle of Sep. This team isn’t dead yet, and the FO just went out and got a huge boost for the club house.
I don’t see this as just getting a decent bat, Thome is the kind of guy that will take these guys under his wing and show them how to believe.
The 26th (officially today) is my birthday. Thome was my favorite player as a child. Therefore, this is the best birthday ever. Suck on that, people who say 23 is a useless birthday.
That said, kinda bummed this all but implies Hafner is done for the year.
