So what’s the chances Choo signs a multi year contract before next season? What’s the chance Cleveland doesn’t offer him one after this season?
I think Choo’s desire to sign one just went up and I think the team’s desire to sign him long term stays the same. The oblique is fairly minor in the realm of body issues and is a common thing these days. The thumb was beyond anyone’s control and does nothing but remind Choo of the fragile nature of the human body. The real issue is that none of this probably increases Boras’ desire to bend.
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
You’re right about none of this being any consequence to Boras. It’s likely he’ll be ignoring the Indians calls until 2014, and then he’ll only talk out of courtesy.
Besides that, I doubt they’d opt to lock-in another achy bat while still buried under the Hafner contract. Can Choo stay healthy?
Droobs is looking like the the best all-around shortstop in baseball and should be the Indians first priority in extending past 2013.

His hand was injured by a thrown pitch. Since when does that earn a guy the “injury-prone” tag?

No, I’m not. How has he earned your “achy” tag?

Um, TJ surgery?

He also had a thumb injury last year and is currently out of action due to what was initially described as a “trunk strain.”
You may feel comfortable locking up a guy with that injury history, but I don’t.
On one hand, I hope they do lock up Choo, but you have to wonder how durable he is.
I have absolutely zero reservations about locking up Choo. Hafner contract or no, that was a huge risk locking up someone that even before the shoulder was going to be in the field a handful of times each year, tops. Choo is a top-tier talent in the field and at the plate, you don’t pass up any opportunity to extend a player like that. Maybe it isn’t for 5 years plus option, but it is at least for the rest of his arbitration plus one or two.

All my eggs are in the Droobs basket at this point.
He also is a top-tier player in the field and at the plate. As long as we keep Jhonny far, far away, I think he’s a lower risk.
Choo’s also thrown up a tiny red flag on the mental stamina side with the pressing this year before and after his DUI. I said tiny in order not to get jumped all over.
Droobs appears to be dragging a bit as well as of late though to not counting that shot Saturday night.
Locking up Asdrubal appears to be cheaper and more likely considering who his agent isn’t. With that in mind, it seems to make more sense to focus on signing Cabrera.
I’ll take either one—or preferably both. Neither would be a real bummer.
Oh, I agree with you. I see locking up Asdrubal to a 5-6 year deal. I think most agents would agree that a deal can’t just reflect the 2011 season but rather an aggregate of the last four, weighted towards 2011. I think it’s a make-able deal.
I don’t see a long-term deal for Choo. If they want to sign a reasonable-cost four-year deal, fine. Otherwise, we’re “mostly all in” on 2012 and 2013 anyway, it’s just fine to go year-by-year or sign a two-year deal to lock in cost certainty. I would inquire about extending Choo but wouldn’t make a huge push.
Are we certain that we have to decide between the two just yet?
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
Yes. Absolutely. You are running out of time and we are in danger of losing both if you start riding the fence now! ANTONETTI IS READING THIS!
I don’t mean the time to decide isn’t now, I mean to say are you sure we still can’t get them both?

I don’t see Boras playing ball. Had Choo had a healthy All-Star type year, I’d bet my house that he’d have rode Choo into arbitration. Aside from potentially maximizing Choo’s salary, it help’s sour the relationship between team and player and would help Choo “cut the cord” with any allegiance he has with Cleveland.
I hope I’m wrong, but Boras’ negative reputation has me bracing for heartbrake when Choo sign elsewhere or gets traded ahead of that.
The key element really is Boras. Can Choo do what so few have done and actually take command of what he wants in a contract without letting Boras do it for him? I think he will, but there is way more evidence to suggest that you’re correct, that is for sure.

Boras?…. Courtesy?… Which Boras are you talking about?
I hardly view Choo as an achy bat at this point.
The Indians could offer Choo (and Boras) a raise over next year’s salary with a multi-year contract, since this season should depress his next arbitration number. I also think we saw earlier this season that Choo is a player who can be affected mentally by off the field issues. The argument could be made that Choo would produce better with the comfort and security of having a contract in place. Boras could be interested in that if it meant a greater probability he will be able to break the bank when he hits the FA market.
I would love for the Indians to get an extra year or two of Choo out of a deal like that, but even if it was only for the next 2 years, the most effective version of Choo would be beneficial to both sides.
I’ll go on record saying that, regardless of the Boras element, I won’t be surprised to see Choo sign a 3-4 year deal this off-season. I think the mental element of this year has done that much to him. The Indians will show that they are still on his side and still believe in him every bit and he’ll make his mark.

Goodbye, Mr. 348/412/609/1.020 in your brief return from the DL! It was nice to see you again. Don’t be a stranger!

No, we do grammar here, not math.

We’re not smart enough for math. Gotta go to Lookout Landing for that.

They’re much more used to working with infinitesimal OPSes, though.

Probably not, since the rosters expand in a couple days. Though I’m trying to figure out how they’ll get Gomez on the 25-man roster for tonight’s game without either going with three outfielders for a couple days or going without a backup to Asdrubal for a couple days. Or maybe sending Herrmann down.
I can’t believe I’m asking this:
With all of these injuries, is there a chance that Trevor Crowe sees time in the outfield this year?
His rehab assignment has been moved to Columbus and he is supposed to start today
I would kill for him to play IF he can tweet during the game.

Sure hope Detroit is thanking their lucky stars half our offense is on the DL.
I hope we catch them, but it is likely we can’t with that much offense missing. However, if we stay within shouting distance, this can only bode well for 2012. Add in some offense to the above average rotation and hopefully another successful pen, we got a great chance to make up the difference.
