Game 109: Indians 7, Red Sox 3
I guess this is what happens when the offense clicks.
Justin Masterson got through six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out nine. He had to leave after six not because of ineffectiveness, but because he thrown over 115 pitches just getting to that point. In his final inning, he pitched around another botched double play, ending his evening with a strikeout of Jason Varitek.
Masterson left the game in the lead because the Tribe offense took the lead 5-3 in the top of the inning. Carlos Santana took Franklin Morales deep for a two-run homer; it was just his second homer as a right-hander this season. Santana would finish the game with a 3-for-4 line, and the other guys in the middle order had similar nights. Travis Hafner also had three hits, including two doubles, and Asdrubal Cabrera would score three times.
The Indians were fortunate in that Erik Bedard was on a pitch count, which was reached by the fifth inning. That left a gap in the game, and the Indians took advantage, scoring two in the sixth and another in the seventh. And because the Yankees were coming to town for a weekend series, Terry Francona left Andrew Miller out there to (almost) finish the game. Miller, who seems off proportionally because of his long legs, threw over 70 pitches in 2.2 innings of work. The former top prospect (and one of the top pieces of the haul for Miguel Cabrera) was all over the place, and seemed to go to a full count on each hitter whether the hitter wanted to or not. His stuff is still there, but the other components of a major-league pitcher aren't.
By the time the game reached the ninth inning, the lead was a luxurious four runs, but because Chris Perez had already warmed, he pitched the bottom of the ninth anyway.
Thus ended a well-played and especially well-pitched series in Boston, though the results didn't match. But the hitting environment is going to get even tougher, and the lineup not any easier. Ubaldo Jimenez will make his Cleveland debut tomorrow night in Texas, with the Tigers playing in Kansas City.

Hopefully the offense in this series will carry for the rest of the year. So weird seeing 7 runs on the board.
Hafner looks like he is out of his slump, Kipnis is on a roll, and things are looking up.
Pretty amazing how much macro-tribe sentiment can swing game to game.

I will agree with first half of that statement but mostly disagree with the last part. Yes we could have swept all fours games as both games 2 and 3 were very winnable (especially against Wakefield).
But I think if you asked anyone on this site, we all would have been thrilled with the 2-2 split.
I think the Tribe will come out of this series feeling pretty good, knowing that they were thisss close to a sweep. Now onto Texas where 2 of 3 will be a great result. And I think even a 1-2 result would be acceptable.
this is what I am feeling exactly and I think they can play Texas well. It also depends on how Ubaldo does in his first start in the AL

Intensive Purposes? I could care less...
your whole argument is a fallacy!
I think he will be alright, not great but alright. More worrisome is facing Holland who has been on fire. 3 CG shutouts in his last 5 starts. He has a few starts where he has imploded, though, and we could use one of those.
Not to knock this analysis, but you can probably just assume that everyone would agree if you said, before every game we ever play, “We could use a start in which the opposing pitcher implodes.”
For those of you who must have a lawn mowing update – I did mow the lawn, but not before going out for a few drinks with co-workers. Came home, score tied 3-3 heading to the top of the 6th. Started mowing the lawn and noticed that the Sox brought in Morales, who had really stuck it to the Tribe earlier in the series. I started to sigh, but then I said screw it. “F___ Franklin Morales”, I said to myself. Then I smiled as I saw the next two updates – “T. Hafner doubled to center…C. Santana homered to center.”
Lawn should be ready for mowing sometime during the Tiger series…
I did mow the lawn, but not before going out for a few drinks with co-workers.
Dude, we appreciate the advantage your lawn mowing give the tribe, but remember to count your toes when you’re done.

Hopefully Pomeranz becomes Andrew Miller v2.0. I can handle all of the cle.commers harping on this trade for the next 6 years if he becomes David Price.
but I heard that if he wins 10 games in 2013 they have to give White back.

How many threads will we go through during the game tomorrow? Seems like a game even lurkers will emerge from their holes to watch.
2-2 split is acceptable. What’s encouraging is that with a couple of well timed breaks or hits (Choo or Sizemore?) we could have swept this series. Boston can’t say the same thing.
Just get into the playoffs. Just get there. ANYTHING can happen with the small sample size, we saw that in 2007. Just get in. Even though the die is loaded for the Bostons and the New Yorks, it doesn’t come up sevens on every roll; we have the pitching to put ourselves in the position to get lucky. Just get in.
Il faut d'abord durer.
I agree Adam. The die is actually loaded for the big boys to get into the playoffs, not necessarily win it when they get there. I have this argument with a NY friend and a Philly friend. The travesty of the MLB system is not (as a lot of folks think) that the yankees or red sox or phillies will win the next 10 world series. It’s that they will most likely be able to buy their way into the next 9 or 10 playoffs and have the opportunity to win it.
The crap shoot that is the MLB playoffs is what Selig banks on to scream parity.

But Boston didn’t need these actual victories like the Tribe needed them. Sure, a moral victory is great, but the fact of the matter is we still lost another game off the Tigers’ pace. Eventually they’re going to have to start winning some series.
Winning these would be helpful.

I would argue that the die never comes up seven, but that’s beside the point. Freaking Ubaldo tonight.
Sounds like someone didn’t play D&D in high school.
Don’t feel like you missed anything. It probably just means you actually went on dates.

Here is a weird stat for you. Tomlin has given up more Jacks 20 than walks 16.
OCab is no longer my bête noire.
That depends on how many walks the pitcher has as well as on the differential.
by jakesinger777 on Aug 5, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
It isn’t a good stat, but it isn’t a bad one either. I’d say it tells us nothing about the value of any pitcher. While it is true that most pitchers give up more walks than home runs, the ideal pitcher would give up an equal number of both, and that number would be zero. Both are bad. All this really tells us that Tomlin either gives up significantly more home runs than average, gives up significantly fewer walks than average, or some combinations of the two. Sure enough, Tomlin’s BB% (percent of PA’s ending in walks) is the best in the AL among qualified starting pitchers at 2.9%, while the average is about 7.2%. He also gives up more HR than is average, and that is by far his greatest weakness as a pitcher. Still, the elite walk rate tends to cancel those out and right his ERA is a little over 4, which makes him an average starting pitcher. Not bad for a 19th round draft pick, especially if he can maintain his consistency.
by Greatatlantic on Aug 7, 2011 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions
The most recent pitcher to do so was Josh Geer of the San Diego Padres, who in 2009 gave up 27 home runs with 23 walks in 102.2 innings. He has yet to pitch in the majors this year.
As for pitchers that weren’t even close to the 100 IP mark, you have to go back to 2006:
Jon Lieber threw 168 innings, giving up 27 homers and allowing 24 walks.
Carlos Silva threw 180.1 innings, giving up 38 homers and issuing 32 walks.
While not giving up more homers than walks, Curt Schilling threw 204 innings, with 28 homers and walks allowed.

This link is a year old, so I don’t know if anyone did it last year. Cliff Lee came close, with 16 HR’s allowed and 18 BB’s.

There have been 24 pitchers that pitched at least 100 innings and gave up more HR than walks (actually less than 24 individuals, as some did it more than once – Jon Lieber did it three times). Before 1998, there were only seven.
Speaking of that era, there was one year where IROD stole ~29 bases and gave up like 5 more.
OCab is no longer my bête noire.
And grounded into 140 double plays.
Okay, that 140 might be a little high.

Was hoping for either MLB channel, ESPN, or free MLB.TV broadcast for Ubaldo’s debut, but no dice – looks like I’m listening via my phone as usual. Frugality can be a tiny bit frustrating at times.

Boston and New York are playing, so that automatically takes precedence.
Anyway, I’m to the point where I’d rather listen to Hamilton than watch the STO broadcast (luckily I have a setup at home where I can listen to the radio broadcast on a good sound system while watching the muted STO feed), so IMO you’re getting a better experience listening.

More like a curse. If I lived outside the blackout area, I would be tempted to just get MLB.TV + Audio and cancel the satellite. That’s essentially all the broadcast TV I watch anymore, especially during the baseball season.
Overrated. It’s still better on regular TV, trust me. I have not been thrilled with my Roku setup.

It works great in general, but (a) no audio overlay, and (b) the time delay really messes up gamethreading. It’s still better than watching on your laptop, I guess.
by Jay on Aug 5, 2011 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I really wish I could set this up. I’ve got a DVR and satellite so my TV feed is delayed way too much to sync up with radio at any listenable rate. Listening to Manning say “Carrera hustled” to break up a double play that Kipinis did was almost as excruciating as his reasoning for Monday’s Cabrera’s homerun being ruled a single.
Spring for one month of MLB.tv? Could be an interesting month.

Have you ever used the Game of the Day feature (assuming so based on what you said)? They’re running a special right now – MLB.tv premium for $24.99 for the remainder of year.
Thank you for watching the MLB.TV Free Game of the Day. We would like to offer you the opportunity to purchase 2011 MLB.TV Premium at a special low price of $24.99 for the remainder of the 2011 regular season. That is 2011 MLB.TV Premium Yearly for the price of one month of 2011 MLB.TV Premium Monthly (a $55 savings). Now you can watch every out-of-market game live or on demand.
I think they also have a discounted smartphone-only deal as well for the rest of the season. Though I bet watching a game on your iPhone or whatever would get annoying after awhile.
But I could listen to Hammy on my phone with the game on STO … hmmmm.
(I can’t get Tribe radio games in C-bus)
If you’re on the fringe of Columbus you can get the games on AM 1430 from Newark, AM 1490 from Marion or AM 1320 from Lancaster. I have even pulled in the game on 104.5 from Wooster as far south as Westerville. And after dark, if the atmospheric conditions are good, WTAM comes in.

So still no network affiliate in Columbus? That’s crazy, especially considering the freaking AAA team is there.
Same for mlb.tv in general, whether on a PC or Roku.
