The source of the news in the report from @craigcalcaterra on Carrasco’s upcoming TJ surgery is none other than Hector Rondon #indians

Here’s the original story and a poor translation of said story:
Carlos Carrasco would need to undergo Tommy John operation, according to said his friend and fellow pitcher, Héctor Rondón.
Last year went through this same process of tendon transplant, Rondon, said he talked with the grandeliga of the Cleveland Indians.
“Carlos called me yesterday and told me that they were reportedly going to Tommy John,” he said Rondon.
Carrasco is on list of disabled by problems in the right elbow. He ascended to the mound for the last time on August 3, against the Boston Red Sox.
Rondón is in the last phase of his rehabilitation, and on Wednesday made their first gig after passing through the operating room.

Speaking of Rondon…he made his first official rehab appearance this week. One inning for Mahoning Valley.

I don’t think we are going to get that stupid award that Will Carroll hands out this year

Of course it’s true. It’s 2011.
I like ex-Phillies prospects.

Acta: Indians still exploring options for Carrasco (right elbow). Tommy John surgery is a possibility, but is not a certainty at this point
Sure, keep telling yourself that.
I just want to believe.

Won’t be reading anything about Pomz until he recovers from his appendectomy

It is funny — having traded him away, our reaction to this is, “Oh, well, it’s only an appendectomy, that’s nothing.” Had he been our pitcher, it would have been more like, “An appendectomy, ARE YOU F’ING KIDDING ME? Why does this crap only ever happen to our pitchers?” Followed by snide remark about Soloff/Carroll.

no longer a rumor.
“RHP Carlos Carrasco will have right elbow reconstructive surgery next Wednesday in NY City. Hopeful of game activity in 12 months.” via Indians twitter feed.
Someone (Tony?) wrote somewhere that our depth is compromised by two bodies in trading both White and Pomeranz. This omits the fact that the net loss in depth is + Ourbaldo – White – Pomeranz = -1.
Did he mean our 2011 depth? Because Ubaldo has made twice as many starts as W+P combined.

ok so the Phillies (knowingly?) traded us two injured pitchers… I don’t think we’ll be dealing with them again.

Dude, the trade was two years ago. How’s a team supposed to know a guy is going to need Tommy John two years later?

According to Bastian, he’s had this injury since he was a teen.

Soloff: Carrasco likely suffered “traumatic” elbow injury as a teenager. MRI now revealed damage consistent with old injury. Surgery needed.

This is messed up. So here’s my issue with training staffs in major league baseball. Anyone with elbow pain gets an MRI, then the imaging alone is what guides the decision to go to Tommy John. Doesn’t seem like rehab is even considered.
So since the chances of any given pitcher having some degree of elbow discomfort over a 5-year period, why do we not MRI every pitcher? As a clinician, I never advocate for imaging asymptomatic patients since we often find things that may have been insignificant all along, I think elbow MRIs in baseball may be the exception to that rule.

Better question, why not just give every pitcher the surgery when he’s 21?
by Jay on Sep 6, 2011 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, so has every other pitcher who has ever pitched high school baseball.

So does Gomez get a spot in the rotation next year or do we go after a free agent starter?
This is assuming the rest of the rotation is healthy of course
i’m hoping the whistleblower in this saga is ready to step in, but that could be wishful thinking.

For the start of the season that seems doubtful. I would guess the organization tries to limit his innings next year by starting Rondon in Arizona and gradually building him back by late May or June.
