2012 in Review: Esmil Rogers

One of the bright spots of 2012, Rogers was given a second shot after a disastrous start to his season, and took full advantage of it. Perhaps the Indians could make an excellent acquisition even better by moving Rogers back to the rotation.

2012 Age: 26

2012 WAR (Fangraphs): 0.8

2012 WAR (B-Ref): 0.9

2012 Salary: $481K (Renewable)

2013 Contract Status: Renewable or Arbitration (2.132 Service Time)

It hasn't happened often lately, but the Indians may have struck gold with the acquisition of Esmil Rogers in mid-June. The Indians at this point were doing well with the back end of their bullpen, but the front end had been a revolving door. They had already designated both Dan Wheeler and Jairo Asencio for assignment. The Indians needed somebody, anybody, to be able to hold a team in check if they were behind or in the middle innings.

When they acquired Rogers for cash on June 12th, it didn't seem like Rogers could be that guy. From last June's transactions post on Rogers:

Rogers is from the Dominican Republic, and has been in the Rockies organization since he signed with them in 2003. Through all of his minor-league and early major-league career, he was a starter. Despite mediocre to poor results, his stuff pushed him to the majors in 2009. From 2010-2012, he appeared in 70 games (22 of them as a starter). Regardless of the role the Rockies put him in, he struggled to get hitters out despite fantastic stuff. As the 2012 started, the Rockies didn't have an option left, so when Rogers yet again struggled, he couldn't be sent to AAA. So when Colorado signed Jeff Francis last week, they Designated him for Assignment.

The Indians didn't have to give up a player, instead sending the Rockies and undisclosed amount cash. Had the Indians not done this, they may not have been able to land him on waivers, where he probably would have gone.

It turned out that Rogers just needed a change of scenery, as just about from the beginning he pitched well. Walks, which were his major problem, wasn't an issue with the Indians; he walked 12 in 53.0 innings with Cleveland, which is good for 2 per 9 innings, a very nice ratio for a reliever. At the same time, he struck out a batter an inning.

Rogers as a reliever relied on a mid-90s fastball and an excellent slider to have success, but he also has other pitches (including a changeup), as he was a starter up to 2011. The Indians could move him to the rotation if they were so inclined, hoping that his new-found control as a reliever could translate into control as a starter. If the Indians keep Chris Perez, I don't think they would miss Rogers that much in the bullpen with the late-season emergence of both Cody Allen and Frank Herrmann, and even if they deal Perez, Rogers as a starter would be much more valuable to the team that as a 6th/7th guy.
