Indians Avoid Arbitration with Five; Cabrera and Rafael Perez Still Unsigned
The Indians came to terms with five of their seven arbitration-eligible players yesterday, the day when clubs and players exchange numbers.
- Shin-Soo Choo: $4.9M (second arbitration year)
- Justin Masterson: $3.85M (first year)
- Chris Perez: $4.5M (second year)
- Joe Smith: $1.75M (second year)
- Jack Hannahan: $1.35M (first year)
The two arbitration-eligible players not yet signed are Asdrubal Cabrera and Rafael Perez. The Indians haven't gone to arbitration with a player in over two decades, but in Cabrera's case, I'm hoping that the delay means that long-term deal negotiations are ongoing.

All Antonetti needs to do with Asdrubal is point to Choo to show the benefit of signing a long-term deal.

I wonder what a repeat of 2010’s numbers, instead of the misery that was his 2011, would have netted him. 6mil?
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
That’s what I was thinking.
What would he have signed if an extended deal last season? He is probably $10 mill under what he would have gotten at this point, and another year in arbitration that may not match what he would have gotten. I’m not arguing that he made the wrong decision, but the financial comparison between the extension and arbitration starts to benefit the player in this instance. (Unless he has an MVP-level season).

Heyman tweets that Asdrubal filed for $5.2 and the Indians went $3.75

I must not know anything about arb because I’m amazed that C.Perez makes more than Masterson

All you need to know is second-year arbitration player (Perez) and first-year arbitration player (Masterson)
Ah..thanks for the clarification.
Masterson is really the only positive thing that came out of trading Lee and Vic.

Carrasco still has time. Lou Marson and Jason Donald have contributed at the major league level. Nick Hagadone will probably be in the bullpen this year.

You have to be happy for Hannahan for even reaching arbitration. This is the genuine moment of an athlete “taking care of his family.”
Nearly doubled his career earnings with this deal — and keep in mind, he’s been a pro ballplayer for eleven years.

We should have traded Raffy by now. I really don’t like having to pay him what he’ll get.
Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.
For what and to whom?
I doubt we get anything of value for him
