On Wednesday, the Cleveland Indians officially placed pitcher Fausto Carmona on the restricted list, which is often used by teams for players who have violated the terms of their contract.

According to Major League Baseball, players that are added to the restricted list do not count towards the team's 25-man roster, but are unable to sign with another team. Players on the restricted list also do not get paid by their team while on the list.

Does he have to renegotiate if he returns?

Most arguments are really about context.

Do not believe so.

What name did they put on the list?

by Harry Doyle on Jan 26, 2012 1:56 PM EST reply actions

If Roberto gets himself a new work visa and can come play, they’ll put him right back on the active list. I’m betting the Tribe is essentially obligated to do this for roster and payroll reasons, since he (for now) can’t come and fulfill the terms of his deal and they obviously don’t want to release him.

by MTF on Jan 26, 2012 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Sounds right. They don’t have to pay him, but he can’t sign with another team, and it opens up a spot on the 40 man roster. This is hardly a significant development beyond the acknowledgement that he won’t be able to report to camp.

You don’t think it’s the first step in them tearing up his contract and using that money to sign someone else?

by Toxicadam on Jan 26, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

It is likely the first step for both directions, so I think this means nothing.

You oughta run for office or something….

There’s also something in between. I suppose they could renegotiate his contract using his actual age to adjust his future worth, which would still clear some salary space. That’s assuming there aren’t legal constraints on his ability to play.

so if he misses the first 16 games, do we save 10% of his salary?

by westbrook on Jan 26, 2012 4:15 PM EST reply actions

I’d bet this depends on how the “restricted list” rules were designed during the collective bargaining process, but I can’t believe that MLB would be so wimpy that it would end up meaning anything else.

Oh wait.

by MTF on Jan 26, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I would assume it would depend on his role in the organization. If he’s still trying to acquire a work visa, that’s likely the case. If he’s in extended spring training, I believe he would still collect that money.

So we’re officially going with “Hernandez?”

by johnf34 on Jan 26, 2012 5:29 PM EST reply actions

Must be a Spanish thing, where the adjective comes after.

by DixonCayne on Jan 26, 2012 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Traditionally, the father’s last name is before the mother’s, so his father is Hernandez, his mother is Heredia.

by themadlibs on Jan 26, 2012 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Which would also explain Omar Enrique Vizquel González, Manuel Arístides Ramírez Onelcida, and José Dennis Martínez Emilia.

by DixonCayne on Jan 26, 2012 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

I can second this. I’m Colombian, and my dad’s surname is also Hernandez. If I was in Colombia I would also use my mum’s surname and it would be the second surname.

Basically, as illustrated below, I have four names but tend to only use the first and third ones due to custom in England. Its also customary in Latin America to go by your second given name rather than the first…which can be confusing!

I’ll forward that to Mom and Dad, thanks.

Shouldn’t it be 58?

I also like Fauxsto.

I like that better, actually. Makes more sense and flows better.

I like it better in print on the site, but if you say it aloud, it’s hard for people to tell whether you’re saying Fauxsto or just Fausto.

I’ve put a lot of thought into this.

by Chemo on Jan 30, 2012 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

If you pronounce it as in faux pas, then it’s Fow-stow, instead of Faws-toe.
