I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wheeler make the team. They’re really stockpiling veteran relievers. You have to wonder if a trade involving Perez or one or more of their other bullpen guys isn’t in the offing.

my guess is the offing is in June/July. make sure the shotgun approach to the bullpen works, and if it does, some other contender will hopefully be willing to overpay for a “proven” closer in order to win now.

That assumes we’re not contending in June/July

That also assumes a number of these arms are still in the organization. Any word on how many of these guys have opt-outs? Half of them may be gone by mid-May.

This is a deal I like. I could very easily see Wheeler joining the pen.

Assuming Durbin’s role last year I suppose.

According to Jim Callis’ twitter feed, because Wheeler signed a minor league deal the Red Sox do not get compensation – which would have been a sandwich round draft pick and an extra $950k in draft cap space.

Even if Wheeler doesn’t pitch an inning for the Indians, just keeping those pricks from getting compensation is worth it.

Why’d he have to agree to a minor league deal? Was there really so little interest in a pretty proven guy?

Turns out he doesn’t like hotpot either

Interesting that the cap space may be more valuable than the pick.

No opt out date in the contract, per Bastian.
Considering other guys we signed to have them, that surprised me.
