Game 160: White Sox 11, Indians 0

It might not have mattered, given that as of this moment the Tigers are six outs from clinching the AL Central title, but still, the Indians didn't do much to challenge the White Sox. What little of a challenge there was came in Corey Kluber's first five innings, in which he looked very good. Those five shutout innings was the highlight of the game.

Unfortunately, there are 9 innings in a baseball game, and the Indians pitchers were as bad in those final four innings as Kluber was good in the first five. Kluber's final line looked like this....

5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 6 SO, 2 BB, 97 Pitches (62 Strikes)

..but many of the bad numbers were compiled in the sixth, and mostly after two outs in the sixth. With a runner on second and two out Adam Dunn singled up the middle, breaking a scoreless tie. Kluber then just couldn't get an out, walking Paul Konerko and giving up a rocket off the bat of Alex Rios that ended being a single because he bounced so far off the left field wall. Joe Smith was then summoned, but he'd allow two more hits and two more runs to score.

Meanwhile the Indians, who beat up Hector Santiago in his previous start, couldn't touch the Chicago left-hander. Santiago in what will probably be his final start of the season would go 7 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one hit and one walk, and striking out an amazing 10 batters. It was one of the best pitching performances I've seen this year, and it came in a situation where Chicago had to win. After this start, I don't see Santiago going back into the bullpen.

Speaking of bullpens, the Tribe bullpen, which had been very good in the month of September laid an egg. Joe Smith's appearance was noted above, but the normally excellent Cody Allen allowed a run, Esmil Rogers would allow two runs, and Scott Maine cemented his post-season DFA by giving up a 9th-inning grand slam to Dayan Viciedo. The slam capped off a six-run ninth for Chicago, who might be eliminated tonight, but if they are, they ended their contention with a bang.

Two games to go.
