More roster shuffling....

The Indians dropped two from their 40-man roster and added one on Friday:

  • First, as expected, they non-tendered Jack Hannahan. With Lonnie Chisenhall penciled in as next year's starter at third base, and with Hannahan eligible for another year of arbitration, it didn't make sense to bring Jack back as a bench player.
  • Seddon was another move that was expected. Seddon made a few starts with the Indians last year when their rotation imploded in the second half, and while he did a decent job as a swingman, his stuff isn't that great, and the Indians were going to need to make room for major-league acquisitions over the next couple of weeks. If Seddon passes through waivers, I believe he can be outrighted without having the option to declare free agency.
  • With the two open spots, the Indians claimed 1B Mike McDade on waivers from Toronto. McDade spent 2012 mostly in AA New Hampshire, hitting .275/.354/.437. He's 23 years old, and he's a switch hitter, something you usually don't see from a corner player. McDade is the third first baseman acquired since the end of July (Lars Anderson, Yan Gomes), and while none of the three should be starting at first base next year, at the very least the Indians are building some high-minors depth at the position.
