If the Indians thought that would be able to get Russ Canzler, they were mistaken, as Toronto has claimed him on waivers.
Toronto Blue Jays Claimed 1B/OF Russ Canzler off waivers from the Cleveland Indians
Toronto and Cleveland have made several transactions together, whether directly (the Rogers for Aviles/Gomes) or indirectly (McDade to Cleveland and now Canzler to Toronto on waivers).
In this week's transactions post, I made my opinions known; I think Canzler can be a useful bench player, and the Indians still could have used him even if they eventually sign Nick Swisher. But if you look back at the offseason to date, the Indians in effect already made their decision on Canzler by acquiring Yan Gomes in the Rogers deal and selecting Chris McGuiness in the Rule 5 Draft. If they end up keeping McGuiness, they will no doubt try him out in the outfield, and would use Gomes as a backup catcher and also the corner positions if needed.
But still the Indians are rather thin in corner players on the 40-man roster; if the season started today, they'd only have four position players in total in AA or AAA and also on the 40-man roster. I don't think they're done tinkering at 1B/DH, whether that tinkering will come through a major-league signing or an NRI. So even with those other options mentioned above, I thought there was a good reason to keep Canzler on the roster over the likes of David Huff (out of options, horrible minor-league stats) or Blake Wood (injured). I guess we'll see whether this was a roster gaffe or a good case of correctly scouting your own players.
