De La Cruz is DFA'ed to make room for Kotchman on the 40-man roster. This is his first DFA, so if unclaimed, KDLC will be back in Akron/Columbus for 2012.

The only other pitchers on the 40-man roster that seem like DFA candidates are Corey Kluber (who remains a depth starter/bullpen option for 2012) and Danny Salazar (who still seems like a curious choice to have rostered back in November). The Indians currently have a lot of positional players on the 40-man, though, with 10 listed infielders and another 8 outfielders. Still some room to make adjustments in the case that one or several of the NRI’s make the club out of spring training.

Still think Wegz has a chance to be DFA’ed. His inability to stay healthy with his good but not great numbers doesn’t bode well.

Matt LaPorta is the bane of my existence.

I think he needs to show he can get through spring training healthy and modestly productive. If he can do that, I think his space is safe.

by APV on Feb 14, 2012 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, assuming health, he makes the perfect person to man DH for us next year/going forward. Putting his high OBP in front of Santana would be very nice. Again, all assuming health. Gotta figure only DHing would help that though.

Fear the Fedora.

It’s highly doubtful that Wegz will ever make a significant contribution to the Indians. Besides his health he hasn’t really hit all that well.

A near.900 OPS across 2 levels in your age 22 season is nothing to balk at. Sure, it isn’t phenomenal, but it isn’t dismissive. His health is the major concern. If he fielded a position well, there might be a little more leeway.

OK. But he’s still nothing to worry about losing. He doesn’t play the OF well, hasn’t been hit all that well or been healthy the last couple of years. There are probably 100 guys just like him floating around.

Let’s sell him low.

by stuart dean on Feb 14, 2012 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps not “probably 100.”

I don’t disagree with Wegz’s future prognosis, but there is no reason for Cleveland to let him go until they have a better option to fill his place. I, for one, don’t see that better option knocking on the roster door at the moment.

This was sort of where I was trying to go. I don’t particularly want him DFA’ed, but as we agree, he is a Spring Training injury away from it. His performance isn’t the motivating factor.

As for De La Cruz, he still has somewhat frightening potential, but he actually hasn’t been good and/or healthy since 2008. The past two seasons he has had terrible consistency in his mechanics, leading to 129 walks in just 213 innings. He also has yet to pitch above AA (aside from 1 inning in last year’s IL playoffs).

by APV on Feb 14, 2012 9:51 AM EST reply actions

Basically, he stinks.

by Cols714 on Feb 14, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Are you saying that De La Cruz is good?

by Cols714 on Feb 14, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Is she?

Sorry. I never checked your profile until now.

by emd2k3 on Feb 16, 2012 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, I just assumed you were referring to KDLC with that.

by ameliorate on Feb 16, 2012 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

She’s not saying Hoynes is good, that’s for sure.

by Jay on Feb 16, 2012 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

Cols uses too many 3-syllable words to be Hoynes.

I watched him pitch in Akron a couple times last year. Wild as hell.

Power lefties blossom later. With this said, the org’s SP depth is actually quite good, especially if Carrasco returns to be effective. I had high hopes for Kelvin, but he won’t be the last young SP that’s derailed by injuries.

Most arguments are really about context.

Power lefties blossom later.

Pursuant to the urban legend clean up program, is this actually true? Or does the Randy Johnson story dominate and erase competing evidence.

by Bogalusa Bomber on Feb 15, 2012 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

Unit is an outlier among outliers. His story would more likely prove the opposite.

by Jay on Feb 16, 2012 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

If we could have only gotten Jeff Juden’s limbs to work so well together from the right side.

Randy Johnson was a freak. But I still thank him for not covering the plate in time in 1995 :)

by Bogalusa Bomber on Feb 16, 2012 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

That got a head tilt from me, too. The first power lefty I think of is Mark Mulder, and he very much peaked early (holy 2001 season, Batman!) and then broke and fell off the face of the earth. The second is Sabathia, but I’d consider him an outlier as well.

by ameliorate on Feb 16, 2012 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

Was Mulder a power lefty? I always remembered him being a finesse guy.

by callmrplow on Feb 17, 2012 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

If you didn’t use so many words to describe things, and just said “he stinks”, it would save a lot of wear and tear on my retinas. They only have so many words in them.
