Game 101: Twins 12, Indians 5

It started so well, yet ended so painfully.

Justin Masterson started the game perfectly, retiring the first 8 batters he faced. But then everything turned around. He walked Joe Mauer with two outs, then made a mistake to Josh Willingham, who tattooed the pitch over the left field fence for the first Twins hit of the game. It would get worse. After a Jack Hannahan error (which should have been called an out, for replays showed that Casey Kotchman kept his foot on the bag), he allowed three more runs to score, and he and the Indians were now down 5-1.

It would get worse. In the sixth, he would be pulled after allowing four more runs. Esmil Rogers, who replaced him, would allow one his inherited runners to score, so Masterson ended the evening with 10 runs (8 earned) on his pitching line. The outing continued the trend of alternating very good with very bad outings since the All-Star Break.

The offense was once again held in check by a Minnesota starter. This time the starter was Samuel Deduno, a 28-year-old right-hander who was signed by the Twins as a minor-league free agent before the season. Deduno was making just his third major-league start, but you wouldn't know it by the way he pitched. Of course, you wouldn't know that the Indians were the .500 team and the Twins the also-rans by the way the two teams have played so far this weekend.

The Indians would score four runs in their last two at-bats to make the score slightly less embarrassing. They've now missed opportunities to gain a game on the Tigers, and with the White Sox winning again in Texas, the division deficit is now 5 games.

Now what?
