Minor League Recap: July 6, 2012

Columbus 10, Indianapolis 6
After scoring four runs in the second, the Clippers erected a picket fence the rest of the way, scoring a run in their final six at-bats. Vinny Rottino, who was claimed by the Indians from the Mets organization recently, went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, missing a cycle by a home run. Tim Fedroff also missed a cycle; he just needed a single, as he doubled, tripled, and homered for the Clippers.

Corey Kluber was the beneficiary of the run support; he allowed four runs in seven innings on 6 hits and walk, striking out 9 batters. Chris Ray, in his final game with the Clippers, allowed two runs in the eighth inning, and Cody Allen, who has taken over the closer's role from Ray, pitched a scoreless ninth.

Erie 6, Akron 3
Geovanny Soto was tagged with all six runs, though just four were earned. 2B Matt Lawson continued to rake, going 3-for-4 with a double. Chun Chen and Adam Abraham added home runs.

Salem 16, Carolina 2
Francisco Jimenez allowed seven runs in 4.2 innings, and Kyle Blair was even worse, allowing 7 runs in relief of Jimenez. Jesus Aguilar, who will be playing the Futures Game tomorrow, went 2-for-3 with a double, and Delvi Cid went 2-for-3 with a triple.

Lake County 9, West Michigan 2
The Captains offense was led by Leonardo Castillo, who went 4-for-5 with a double. The 18-year-old third baseman was promoted to Lake County from the Arizona League, and hasn't hit to this point, but perhaps he's starting to adjust to the Midwest League. Jordan Smith went 3-for-6 with a homer, and Francisco Lindor (who will also be in the Futures game tomorrow) went 2-for-6.

Aberdeen 7, Mahoning Valley 6
The Scrappers fell just short in this back-and-forth game, scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth, but falling a run short. Charlie Valerio went 3-for-4 and Joseph Wendle (6th round, 2012) went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Tyler Naquin went 1-for-4 with a walk. Ryan Merritt got the start and allowed four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings.

AZL Indians 7, AZL Mariners 5
Dorssys Paulino went 2-for-4 with his second home run, and Nick Hamilton (35th round, 2012) went 2-for-4. Nicholas Pasquale started and gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, but the bullpen pitched a scoreless five innings in relief.

Transactions:

Columbus: Released RHP Chris Ray; C Dwight Childs demoted to Carolina (A+)

After the Indians DFAd Dan Wheeler, Ray was at least in the conversation to take his place on the roster. Instead, the Indians chose Jeremy Accardo. So with his opportunities in the Cleveland organization limited (especially now that Cody Allen is closing games), Ray asked for his release.

Carolina: OF Tyler Holt promoted to Akron (AA); C Jake Lowery demoted to Lake County (A-)

Holt (10th round, 2010) is a fringe prospect, a good defender in center field, and can steal some bases. He's 23 years old, and this will be his first experience the upper levels of the minors. Since Tim Fedroff was promoted to Columbus, center field in Akron has been manned by Jordan Henry and Thomas Neal, with Neal being more of a corner outfielder and Henry not hitting much.

Lowery (4th round, 2011) had struggled in Carolina (.222/.315/.325), and will switch places with Alex Monsalve.

Lake County: C Alex Monsalve promoted to Carolina (A+)

Monsalve was in his second season with the Captains, and the 20-year-old from Venezuela had improved both his power numbers and strikeout/walk rates versus last year. This season, he threw out 27% of potential base stealers.
