A night after going 4-4 with a double and a HR, Cord Phelps went 4-5 with a double and a HR (#15). Russ Canzler, who went 2-5, also added a double and a HR (#18). TJ McFarland pitched well for seven innings, while Loek Van Mil had a scoreless two-inning debut for Columbus.
Toru Murata, someone I identified as a sleeper prospect entering this season, pitched four scoreless innings as the spot starter. More interesting, Trey Haley pitched three scoreless innings in relief, with one hit, no walks and four Ks. Haley has been terrible as a pro (now in his fifth partial season), but is still just 22 and is still throwing a fastball in the upper 90s. If he can stay healthy and hold his mechanics, he is certainly one of the more interesting pitchers in the upper part of the system. It will be interesting to see if the Indians try to stretch him out into a starter's role for next year.
Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach 5 (11 innings)
Ronny Rodriguez hit his 16th HR of the season as part of a 3-4 night, but Carolina could not hold on in extra innings. After Rob Nixon pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and J.D. Reichenbach added two more, Reichenbach's own throwing errors led to the game ending run.
Lake County had a lot of offense--including 2-3 with a double from Francisco Lindor, 2-4 with a double from Jake Lowery, 2-4 with two doubles from Byson Myles and an Alex Lavisky HR (#10)--but no pitching. Daniel Jimenez gave up 9 runs in five innings as the starter.
Hunter Jones went 2-3 with a triple and Robel Garcia went 3-4 with a double, but five unearned runs late in the game sunk the Scrappers.
Dorssys Paulino (who else?) went 2-4 with 14th double of the season.
