The Trail of Dybzinski (and others)

Editor's Note (Ryan): Promoted from the FanPost section

AKA Acquiring the Indian Franchise 2012

As noted last year, when Jensen Lewis was released, one of the longest transaction chains in Indian history was put on full life support with the faintest pulse being John Drennen. And as expected, Drennen was released at the end of the season, thus ending the trail started back with the drafting of Ray Fosse in 1965, Jack Brohamer and Jack Heidemann in1967.

Not only was it a bad year for the oldest transaction chain, it was also a bad year for older transaction chains in general. Another six degree transaction with Mitch Talbot also ended. His transaction train went back to 1990 with the signing of Jose Cabrera and a minor league signing in 1991 of Kyle Washington. One half of the remaining longest chain was also let go, Luis Valbuena.

That now leaves Joe Smith as the holder of the longest chain, 11 degrees. He can trace himself all the way back to the drafting of Jerry Dybzinski in 1977. Cory Kluber has the second longest chain, nine degrees, but he also has the same length of time, also tracing back to Dybzinski. After those two, the longest chain belongs to Chris Perez, a mere five degrees, tracing back to Bartolo Colon’s signing in 1993 and Tim Drew’s drafting in 1997.

After the list of all the team rosters with how each player was acquired is a list of players let go in the past year. If they have joined another team, they are noted in parentheses.

Notes: I have included compensation draft picks as being more than one degree as the Indians obtained that pick based on a player they formally held rights to. Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December 05 would be 2006). Additionally, whenever I could not find confirmation of an amateur free agent signing, the year defaults to their first appearance. [aFA = amateur free agent, mFA = minor league free agent]
