I think Shelley Duncan is still a useful player. He's a streaky hitter (.617 OPS in June, 1.103 in July, .414 in August) but he's an excellent guy to have on your bench as a pinch-hitter/spot starter. Heck, his 11 home runs this season was only 3 behind the team leader (Asdrubal Cabrera) despite being a part-time player. The Indians were never comfortable with Duncan as an everyday player. Yeah, he won the starting left field job, but only by default. He lost his job to Johnny Damon, and later to Ezequiel Carrera. The Indians saw him as a part-time time player, and tried very hard to keep him a part-time player.

It's very easy to like Duncan. You know he's not much of a fielder, and he's an all-or-nothing hitter, but I suppose that's part of the charm. Every time he swings the bat, he's trying to hit the ball as far as he can, as if he's being paid by each foot of home run distance. And his role in this walk-off celebration made the picture classic.

But the Indians were going to move on sooner or later, whether they needed a 40-man roster spot in September or when it came time to offer the arbitration-eligibles a 2013 contract. It turned out that the Indians moved on sooner, for thanks to two short starts in a row, they needed an extra pitcher, and couldn't afford to wait the couple days for the active roster to expand.

Gomez might get a spot start in September. The Indians have toyed with a six-man rotation, but the three off-days next month mean the six starters wouldn't be going on regular rest, or that one starter would be skipped several times. So for now Gomez will remain in the bullpen, pitching in long relief, and building himself back up for a run at a starter's job next spring. He's only 24 years old, but he's had a down season, including at AAA; in early August, he tossed 15 consecutive shutout innings, but his last two starts were short ones.
