Transactions: Indians DFA Accardo, Recall Seddon

Chris Seddon.

Designated RHP Jeremy Accardo for Assignment

Purchased the Contract of LHP Chris Seddon; Recalled him to Cleveland

The Indians couldn't afford to have Derek Lowe make another start, but since Fausto Carmona wasn't going to be available until at least this Saturday, they needed a temporary replacement. They could have called up Jeanmar Gomez, but instead decided to go with Seddon, who was having a decent season in AAA.

Seddon was signed as a minor-league free agent this winter after the last three seasons after spending the last three seasons in the Seattle organization. He made 14 appearances with the Mariners in 2010 out of the bullpen, but spent the entire 2011 season in Tacoma, largely since he had a terrible season there (149.1 innings, 6.27 ERA). Before Seattle, Seddon spent some time in the Florida Marlins organization (including a 7-game stint with the big-league club). He was a 5th round draft pick of Tampa Bay in the 2001 draft, and spent the first 7 seasons of his professional career in the Rays organization.

Seddon has a career minor-league H/9 of 9.4, and career minor-league career ERA of 4.55, not exactly numbers that promise major-league success, but he had turned those numbers around this season in Columbus, despite pitching half his games in a hitter's park. He's been very effective against left-handed hitters, so perhaps the Indians could send him to the bullpen if he's the one booted out of the rotation when Hernandez returns.

Accardo was placed into a long-man role, but couldn't handle it. In his last outing, he allowed 3 earned runs in 2 innings on Friday night, turning a large deficit into an unrecoverable one. That outing marked the fifth time he allowed more than one run in an appearance, and all of those bad outings were 2 innings or less.
