Minor League Recap: August 8, 2012

Columbus 3, Durham 0

Columbus, powered by a steamroller offense most of the season, is suddenly being led by its pitchers. Jeanmar Gomez, for his second outing in a row, blanked his opponents, going eight innings while allowing five hits, no walks and striking out five. Cord Phelps paced the offense with a 3-5 night, including his 29th double of the season.

Akron 5, Portland 1

Paolo Espino pitched six strong innings, lowering his ERA to 3.02 on the season, before giving way to three innings of scoreless relief from Shawn Armstrong, Loek Van Mil and Jose Flores. Roberto Perez went 3-4 with a double and two RBI.

Carolina 6, Salem 7

Carolina gave up three runs in the ninth, costing them the game, but not before going around the horn with homeruns from its infielders. A day after I highlighted his improvements, Giovanny Urshela led the way, going 3-4 with two doubles and his 9th HR of the season. He was joined in the homerun party by SS Ronny Rodriguez (#14), 2B Tony Wolter (#5) and 1B Jesus Aguilar (#12).

Lake County 5, Great Lake 2

Jose Ramirez, Jordan Smith and Leo Castillo all had multiple hits, including doubles, helping to carry the Captains over the Loons.

Mahoning Valley 0, Williamsport 6

Luis DeJesus had his worst outing since joining Mahoning Valley, giving up four runs in five innings, and the Scrappers offense was unable to produce anything on Williamsport's pitching staff.

AZL Indians 8, AZL Reds 6

Eric Haase hit his first pro HR and Felix Sterling continued his regrouping efforts in Goodyear, striking out seven in four innings of relief.
