The Arizona Fall League will hold its championship game this afternoon, pitting the Surprise Saguaros against the Mesa Solar Sox against one another for the crown. The game will be broadcast live in the MLB Network, beginning at 3:00 PM Eastern.
Each AFL team hosts prospects from five different Major League teams, and Surprise features a number of minor leaguers from the Indians system, including a couple likely to land in the top ten on Tribe prospect lists released this winter.
Tyler Naquin, the Indians' 1st-round pick in 2012, leads the Saguaros with 39 hits and 22 runs, and will likely be starting in centerfield and hitting leadoff for the team today. Joe Wendle, the Tribe's 6th round pick has impressed with a .311/.371/.492 line in the AFL, and will probably get the start at second base.
Pitching prospect Shawn Armstrong (18th rund pick in 2011) leads the Saguaros with a 1.59 ERA in 10 relief appearances, so there's a good chance he'll be called on at some point in the game as well.
Mesa features Angels 1B C.J. Cron (#2 in their system) and Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler and 3B Kris Bryant . Those last two will both land among the top 40 on major prospect lists this offseason.
The AFL season is short (30 games), so the samples are small, but the league is generally considered to be equivalent to Double-A, so it's good to see those members of the Indians farm system doing well there.
