MLB Draft 2013: Cleveland Indians sign 4th round pick LHP Kyle Crockett

Kyle Crockett - USA TODAY Sports

The Indians have now signed eight of their nine pool picks, and have a $332,600 surplus to spend on players in the later rounds.

Yesterday the Indians signed 4th round pick Kyle Crockett, according to NBC29 (Charlottesville, Virginia):

The Virginia baseball team will have a new closer at the back of the bullpen for the fourth year in a row next season, as junior Kyle Crockett has agreed to a deal with the Cleveland Indians.

Crockett signed for a reported assigned slotted bonus of $463,000.

The bonus was just under the assigned slot value of $463,600.

Crockett, if the Indians keep him at closer, will probably be the first player from this draft to reach the majors. He walked only 7 batters in 58.1 innings his junior season, and combined that with 71 strikeouts. Based on various scouting reports, fastball command is how he's succeeded, as his slider is considered average.

So, with Kivett staying at Kansas State for his senior season, the Indians are done with their pool picks.

The Indians can now turn their attention towards some players they picked from rounds 11-40. Their $332,600 surplus can be spent on bonuses exceeding $100,000. If they spent the current surplus on one player, for instance, they could give out a bonus of up to $432,600. Or they split it up on several players.

Some possible targets:

  • 11th Round - RHP Adam Putko (College Junior) - He has fringy stuff, but has a very good feel for pitching. The best of his four pitches is his changeup.
  • 30th Round - LHP Aaron Brown (College Sophomore) - A draft-eligible sophomore, Brown was rated in the Top 100 by Baseball America. This four pitches are all considered above-average, though he doesn't command them consistently. I'm guessing he'd be the first target for the Indians.
  • 31st Round - RHP Wil Crowe (High School) - Committed to South Carolina, Crowe is a big guy (6'3", 235 pounds) with not much projection left. In Baseball America's Top 150 draft prospects.
