Cleveland Indians Series Preview: Minnesota Twins, July 19-July 21

Joe Mauer - USA TODAY Sports

After enjoying the All-Star break, the Tribe opens the second half with a quick six game road trip with the first stop in Target Field in Minneapolis.

The Tribe makes their first venture to the Twin Cities this season to take on the division rival Minnesota Twins. This three game set is scheduled for Friday and Saturday with 8:10 PM starts, and the Sunday game is set for 2:10 PM. After the game, the Indians trek to the West Coast for the first time this season with a three game set in Seattle.

Since we last met, the Twins have fallen off a cliff. They were swept in a two game series in Miami, split four with the Royals, lost four straight to the Yankees, lost two of three to the Blue Jays, lost four straight to the Rays before finally winning a three game set versus the Yankees. The lineup has very little punch, and they have very little team speed, even with some younger players getting playing time. The results of pitching staff have finally regressed to how they have been pitching. They give up a lot of hits, they walk too many guys and strike out the fewest hitters in the AL. The WHIP of 1.422 is not a recipe for success. The defense has been good, fourth in fielding percentage, and they still lead the league in double plays turned, but that might be because of all the baserunners the pitchers allow.

While this lineup has flexibility with three switch hitters, as long as the pitchers avoid the M&M boys, there isn't much to scare you here. Sadly, these are the type of hitters the Tribe pitchers usually struggle against. For example, Plouffe has a career 308/375/615 slash in 104 PA. During the break, the Twins shuffled their bench roster, optioning Chris Parmalee, Oswaldo Arcia and Eduardo Escobar, while recalling Chris Herrmann and Doug Bernier. Herrmann can catch, play some outfield, but will most likely DH. Bernier (had only 4 PA in 2008 with Colorado) will back up in the infield along with LGFT Jamey Carroll (47 OPS+).

Pelfrey got the win in his lone start against the Tribe back in May. He pitched six innings, struck out seven, gave up four hits, a walk, and one earned run. His ERA since June 1 has been decent, 3.73. Correia, a fellow Cal Poly Mustang (my alma mater), also started one of the May games, but took the loss, giving up four runs in only five innings, including solo shots to Kipnis and Swisher. He has a 4.60 ERA since June 1. Diamond hasn't faced the Tribe in 2013 yet, but is 3-1 in five starts with a 2.34 ERA in 34.2 IP, but only a 3.4 K/9 in his career against us. He has a 5.44 ERA since June 1.

Perkins hasn't given up a run since May 28. In that 12 game stretch, he has 10 saves, only allowed six baserunners in 12 innings and struck out 14. He has saves in both of his 2013 appearances against the Indians. Fien is also another Mustang alum, who has been excellent since June 1. In 18 appearances and 16.1 innings, he has given up 8 hits, no walks, 20 strikeouts and one earned run. That run was a solo shot by our own Drew Stubbs. He also took the loss in extra innings in the May 3 game with the Tribe, when Stubbs doubled home Aviles. Stubbs should definitely pinch hit against him. Other than two bad outings (7 ER in 1.0 IP), Burton has been pretty decent since June 1. He blew the save in that May 3 game, but has two other scoreless appearances against us this year. Anthony Swarzak (118), Josh Roenicke (112), Brian Duensing (90 ERA+), Ryan Pressly (136) and Caleb Thielbar (510) fill out the bullpen.

On the Shelf

  • RF Darin Mastoianni (left ankle surgery) - 60-day DL, possibly early July, in extended ST
  • RP Tim Wood (right rotator cuff strain) - 60-day DL, no timetable for return
  • LF Wilkin Ramirez (concussion) - 15-day DL, no timetable for return
  • LF Josh Willingham (left knee scope) - 15-day DL, possibly early August

Looks like we won't have to deal with Willingham in this series, although his numbers are a far cry from 2012.
