We haven't seen the Mariners since mid-May when we swept a four game series from them in Progressive. They have been basically a .500 team since then, but are riding a six game winning streak. The offense is still in the lower third in the AL in most categories, but there has been some upward improvement since the lineup changes in late May. The starting pitching has been pretty poor with the exception of the top duo of Hernandez and Iwakuma. The bullpen has been average at best. The defense has been pretty good though, fourth in fielding percentage and double plays.

This lineup looks much different than the one we faced in May. Brad Miller has taken over bat challenged Brendan Ryan at short. Nick Franklin is the new second basement, with Dustin Ackley, after a brief demotion to Tacoma, now taking over in center, with Saunders shifting to right. Baseball America #17 prospect Mike Zunino has taken over for Jesus Montero. Morales is a good bet to be dealt at the trade deadline. Expect to see Jason Bay (104) when Kazmir starts, replacing Saunders. The other bench players are Brendan Ryan (50), Endy Chavez (86) and Henry Blanco (57).

Amazingly enough the Tribe miss both of the Mariner All-Star starters, King Felix and Iwakuma. The three we get have either been ineffective so far or just called up. Harang wasn't available when we met Seattle in May. He has a solid 2.95 ERA in 10 career starts against the Tribe with most of them when he with the Reds although the last start was back in 2010. He was ripped by Boston in his last start before the All-Star break. Ramirez opened 2012 in Seattle's bullpen in 2012 and did give up one run in his only appearance against the Tribe. He made four starts in June, was sent down, and returned in September. He spent most of this season with Tacoma (PCL) and had a 3.09 ERA in 7 starts. He made his first 2013 start for Seattle before the break, and was also ripped by Boston. Saunders took the loss in the May 18 game, somehow only allowing four runs in 5.1 innings on two walks and eleven hits, one being a homer by Mark Reynolds.

Hey look, a bullpen with more than one solid lefty. It would be nice if the Tribe could acquire one of them. Wilhelmson only got into one of the four previous games. He blew his first save of the year in that game. With runners on first and third and two out, he could have ended the game, but dropped the throw from Ackley, tying the game. Furbush made it into three of the four games earlier this year. He pitched 3.2 perfect innings with five strikeouts in the first two games, before taking the loss in the tenth inning of the Wilhelmsen blown save game. Perez lost the May 18 game, where Kipnis scored on the Reynolds fielder's choice. He faced one batter in the May 20 game. And even though Perez is an eleven year veteran, he only has three career appearances against us as he spent all of his career prior to last season in the NL. Other options include veteran Yoervis Medina (168), Danny Farquhar (51), Lucas, Luetge (68), Hector Noesi (77) and Bobby LaFromboise (26). One of them will have to be optioned to allow Ramirez to start on Tuesday.

On the Shelf

  • CF Franklin Gutierrez (strained right hamstring) - 15-day DL, on AAA rehab
  • RP Stephen Pryor (right lat tear) - 60-day DL, possible July return, on AAA rehab
  • LF Mike Morse (stressed right quad) - 15-day DL, possible late July return
  • C Jesus Sucre (left hand sprain) - 15-day DL, no timetable for return

Newsflash, well not really, LGFT Gutz is hurt, yet again. He hasn't been healthy been fully healthy since 2010. He actually got into 18 games this season before going down again. Morse (94 OPS+), one of the offseason pickups, was doing ok, not great, before his injury. Pryor is a live arm for the pen and Sucre is catching depth.
