The Indians have optioned starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco back to Triple-A Columbus after he was hit hard Friday night. Relief pitcher Preston Guilmet has been called up in his place.
Carrasco allowed 7 runs (6 earned) on 10 hits against the Tigers last night, lasting just 3.1 innings. The outing raised Carrasco's WHIP to 2.09, which is the worst in MLB this season among pitchers with 25+ innings, and his ERA to 9.10, which would be the worst in franchise history among pitchers with 25+ innings.
Guilmet is a 25-year-old righty who was the Indians 9th round draft pick in 2009, out of the University of Arizona. In 2010 he was converted into a reliever, and he has steadily worked his way up through the system since then, posting an ERA of 2.39 or better in each of the last four seasons, including a 2.32 mark in Columbus so far this season, where he has served as the Clippers' closer. He has struck out 50 while walking only 12 in 42.2 innings of work. His fastball tops out around 90 MPH, but he also throws a solid changeup and slider.
Carrasco was scheduled to start again on Thursday against the Blue Jays. At the moment it's unclear who will make that start.
Update (Ryan):
Just to forestall any confusion, even though the Indians invoked the language “designated for assignment” in their press release, the Indians have not removed Carlos Carrasco from the 40-man roster. Because it’s been 3 years since Carrasco debuted in the majors, the Indians need to pass Carrasco through optional waivers, which is revocable. In the meantime they can designate him for assignment while the waiver process is completed. If someone claims him (which is very doubtful), the Indians can pull him back from waivers and option someone else to Columbus.

The latest 25-man/40-man roster:
In order to add Guilmet to the 40-man roster, the Indians moved Lou Marson to the 60-day Disabled List. Marson hasn't played in a major-league game since April 24th, and hasn't appeared in a professional game of any sort since June 7th.
