Permanent Prospect That Matters post

This will be the final in-season update of 2013. Starting next week, I'll recap each club separately, leading up to the post-season PTM update in late October or early November.

PTM Update

Stats are either major-league stats (if the player is presently in the majors) or overall minor-league stats (if the player is presently in the minors).

Position Players

Age Position/Player Level PA BA/OBP/SLG OPS 2B HR SO BB

18 SS Dorssys Paulino A- 501 .248/.300/.352 .652 26 5 85 29

Nobody has eye-popping numbers, but if you look at age and level, there's some impressive performances. Lindor obviously leads the crowd with what he did both in Carolina and Akron as a 19-year-old, but don't overlook what Jose Ramirez did as a 20-year-old in Akron, what Tony Wolters did all the while learning the most difficult of baseball positions, and Jesus Aguilar slowly but surely blossoming into a first base prospect that could crack the big leagues as soon as next season. Even Dorssys Paulino held his own as an 18-year-old in a full-season league.

Pitchers

Age Role/Player Level IP G ERA H/9 SO/9 BB/9
25 RP Preston Guilmet AAA 62.1 47 1.73 6.2 10.3 2.0
25 RP Scott Barnes*(DL) AAA 27.2 23 7.81 9.8 11.4 6.5
23 SP TJ House* AAA/AA 151.1 26 4.10 9.6 7.5 3.1
22 SP Trevor Bauer AAA 116.1 21 4.18 8.9 7.8 5.1
22 RP Giovanni Soto* (DL)
AAA 8.2 9 5.19 8.3 8.3 9.3
23 RP Trey Haley AA 40.0 37 4.28 7.4 9.2 8.1
23 SP Danny Salazar MLB 23.0 4 3.52 5.9 11.3 2.7
22 RP Shawn Armstrong
AA 28.1 27 4.76 9.2 11.1 6.4
20 SP Shawn Morimando A+ 133.0 26 3.32 7.4 6.8 4.7

There's some great stories, but also some major disappointments. Salazar is pitching with the big-league club, but Trevor Bauer is limping into the final week of the season. TJ House has made himself a major-league option perhaps as soon as next spring. Armstrong and Haley both struggled with wildness in AA, while Soto miss practically the entire season. Preston Guilmet has been as good as any reliever in AAA. Morimando should get a stern test in AA next season.

Too Accomplished Update

Here are players who are in the minors or majors, meet the age/level requirements, but no longer have rookie status.

Cleveland (25 and younger)

  • RHSP Zach McAllister (Age 25) 105.0 IP, 3.51 ERA (0.9 bWAR)
  • C Yan Gomes (Age 25) 221 PA, .289/.339/.483 (2.6 bWAR)
  • RHRP Bryan Shaw (Age 25) 3.92 ERA, 3.92 ERA (0.1 bWAR)
  • RHRP Cody Allen (Age 24) 57.1 IP, 2.20 ERA (1.3 bWAR)
  • 3B Lonnie Chisenhall (Age 24) 259 PA, .218/.264/.356 (0.8 bWAR)

If you go by bWAR, Yan Gomes is the third most valuable position player on a club that is 12 games above .500. That's quite an amazing rise for a guy who started the season as at best an afterthought.

Likewise, Cody Allen has been one of the more valuable pitchers on the staff, which is quite an accomplishment for a reliever. He's the closer of the future.

Baltimore (Rule 5)

Chicago Cubs (Rule 5)

  • RHP Hector Rondon (Age 25) 45.2 IP, 5.72 ERA (-0.7 bWAR)

In one week the Indians will officially lose ties to both McFarland and Rondon, but once the two pitchers stuck on major-league rosters past the middle of May, it was a given that the Indians would lose both. Rondon hasn't had a good season, but that's to be expected, as he threw just 7 minor-league innings in 2012. He's the one that I think the Indians will miss the most. McFarland has done a decent job in Baltimore's bullpen as a swingman/longman, and will eventually get a real chance in the rotation.

  • RHP Francisco Lopez (Age 19) 39.1 IP, 1.83 ERA
  • RHP Edward Estrella (Age 19) 63.0 IP, 2.86 ERA

There's been some outstanding performances in the short-season leagues. Francisco Mejia should be on your radar, as he's backed the hype. Clint Frazier has been as advertized. Luis Lugo has been as advertized. Most of the 2013 draft class has lived up to expectations, including Kyle Crockett, who will finish his first professional season in AA. Sean Brady, the high school pick out of Florida, has dominated a league that favors hitters.

And there were several late-season promotions that give some prospects the PTM criteria. Cody Anderson, Tyler Naquin, Luis Lugo, and Ryan Merritt all now qualify for inclusion after having nice seasons as players slightly old for their level. I'll be examining each of these players more closely, as well as everyone else on the above lists this fall.

Too Old to Matter but Possible Contributors

Although minor-leaguers older than 25 are excluded from PTM, that doesn't mean older players can't help the Indians. Here are some of those players:
